Today we’d like to introduce you to Sammy Lopez.
Hi Sammy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I took on a new hobby every summer. I experimented in everything from music to web development, and eventually landed with visual arts. More specifically, photo and film. My journey really begins the year that Instagram took off as an up-and-coming photography platform. Our local community of friends on Instagram began putting on events called “Instameets,” where we’d gather together, shoot photos of each other, and cross-promote. I didn’t have my own camera at the time, so I got by borrowing my friend’s cameras! We’ve come a long way since those days. Today, my wife and I get to work with dozens of families, friends with local businesses, and beyond. Together we operate a photo and film agency called Brimstone Creative, which gives us the constant opportunity to refine our craft. It is my greatest pleasure to serve our community by providing them with genuine and thoughtful imagery that tells their stories.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I actually found that creating the business and running it was fairly easy, as that stuff comes pretty naturally to me. To my surprise, the real challenge was that of my own personal development. At the core of our business is an incredibly strong desire to tell our client’s stories in a way that is raw and emotive. I never expected that pursuing that end would require me to do my own “soul searching,” so to speak. I quickly found that, in an effort to be more genuine in our craft, we’d have to become more vulnerable in our daily walks of life. My wife, Summer, and I pursue solid friendships and working relationships with our clients. We believe that our work necessitates it. Summer has this awesome theory that people come across differently in photos or in the film when they’re being captured by someone that they love. There’s a sense of freedom and raw personality that comes out when people are entirely comfortable with us while we capture them. This is our simple – and meaningful – approach to the work we do: to so genuinely care for our clients that, by the time they get in front of the lens, their real self is on full display.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We own and operate a small photo and film agency in North DFW. We have a broad range of clients and experience. Whether it is family or senior portraits, corporate films, or anything between, we maintain the same authentic approach. When we’re not working directly with clients, we work to build an ever-growing library of online assets for other creators to purchase and use in their own projects. I’m incredibly proud that our hobby ended up turning into the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done.
