Today we’d like to introduce you to Zay Penny.
Hi Zay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My passion for art, fashion started when I was young. Fashion is almost like a religion, for me at least. I grew up in that environment coming from Atlanta/Augusta, GA area. I get it, I identify with it. It’s nothing I had to learn. I grew up infatuated with Luxury brands, clothes I couldn’t afford, of course. Played the game smart, got a job at a high fashion retail store and started personal styling customers that came to the store often. After a year or two of helping friends, clients with their wardrobe, inspired by renelle madrano book “pampara,” I wanted to create a cool look book featuring my styling on top-tier models.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Come clean it has, I mean other than hiring photographers, booking the studios, etc. The styling part and finding elite models was easy. I’m well connected in Houston and Dallas in the industry so finding the right people was no stress at all.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m the editor of CreativeFace Magazine. I’ve partnered with them to create my first styling book, “Abnormal,” 123 pages of different styles on 30 different professional models. One of many projects I have in store for this year. I creative direct fashion shows, design clothes, I collect, paint and host art galleries. I guess what sets me apart from my peers is I’m very good and passionate in everything I do. I don’t focus on one thing, I’m not just good at one artistic profession.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I love networking, getting far in the fashion industry is half talent, half networking. It’s all about who you know now a days. It’s worked wonders for me, my contact list is filled with designers and models.
