Inspiring Conversations with Rocio Mendoza of Dewdrop Floral Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocio Mendoza.

Rocio, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The idea of creating a floral business started my last semester of college. One of my assignments was to create a business plan and having a floral business just made sense, it would allow me to really work with my creative side and also work with different people. At the time, the idea of having a flower business was not supposed to happen for another 3 to 5 years. After graduating, I was ready to go into the workforce and put my degree to work, then COVID-19 happened and it put a huge pause to all the plans I had. As the quarantine started, I developed a love for plants, started collecting them and started studying more about plants.

At the same time, I was still applying for jobs but no luck. I am a very impatient person and having everything be put on pause was the worst. It was frustrating not knowing when the pandemic was going to end, so I did the best thing I could do at the time and just talked to God. I asked for signs, for a job, for the pandemic to end and out of the three, he only sent me the signs to start a business. If no one was going to give me a job then I would create one for myself. So I began a florist certificate, studied different flowers, made sure to learn the basics of creating an arrangement and then just began practicing and posting the arrangements on Instagram. I did not think it would lead to anything fast, I thought it would take six months to a year to really get business flow but everyone liked the arrangements. Soon I began to get asked how to place orders if I could create different designs to even wedding bouquets and that to me was a HUGE deal. I began something by listening to God, trusted him in the process and put all my worries in his hands and he led me to a passion that had it not been for COVID-19, would have probably never started.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all!!! I knew nothing about the floral industry, let alone how to start a business with only $20. I had to study the different flower names, greenery, design styles, how to properly hydrate a flower make them last. It was a lot more biology than just playing with pretty flowers. The other half was how to create a business without prior experience, thankfully for that part, my incredible boyfriend helped out from teaching me basic accounting, registering the business, taxes and all the number aspects. This business would have not survive pass three months without his finance knowledge.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dewdrop Floral Designs?
Dewdrop floral designs is a flower arrangement business aspiring to move into the wedding/event industry. Our job is to bring your vision to life. We love bringing smiles one flower at a time, so when it comes to ordering a flower arrangement, it is not just about making flowers look pretty but it is about the person receiving the flowers. What color do they like and is there a theme or a special message behind the flowers. I think that is something that sets us apart, we are not afraid to try new designs and never back from a challenge. One of the things I’m most proud is keeping the business afloat during a time full of uncertainties and never giving up when things have gotten rough. You can always find us via our Instagram @dewdropfloraldesigns, we are just a DM away.

What matters most to you? Why?
God is the number one thing that matters to me. Without him, nothing is possible. He has opened doors that I never thought I would walkthrough. It is a blessing to work with something that he designed, such as flowers. In every arrangement that I’ve done, I always include him. There is not one arrangement that has been created without my mini prayer: ” This is your work, God, use my hands as instruments to create something beautiful, may this flowers show your love and grace.” As much as I may want to take credit, this business has been his doing.
