Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hughey.
Megan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Three sisters (Lauren, Megan and Kristen) from Austin, TX on a Podcast journey to learn and grow alongside with all of you. We currently live in three different cities and offer three different perspectives being a total of eight years apart across the three of us. Our sisterhood is something we are so grateful for and want to invite others to join us on this life journey! The Podcast name, Girl, I Slept in My Makeup, was created by Kristen and is a metaphor that we all mess up in life and it’s okay. We are in this together! Our biggest hope is that after listening to each episode, you love yourself a little bit (or a lot) more than you did before. Let’s all give ourselves more compassion and grace because, let’s face it, we all sleep in our makeup from time to time. Our relatable podcast will hopefully inspire you to love yourself in all stages of life so you can step into your God-given gifts and live out the life He has planned for you.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We launched our podcast three months prior to Covid-19 hitting. At the time, we lived in three different states and Covid-19 brought its own challenges for each of us and our families personally. Then, 2020 ended with our mother tragically passing away in a car accident, rocking us to our core. However, also waking us up to our big picture purpose – shining the light of Jesus and even in the midst of all of life’s grief, pain, and hardships pressing forward to lead a life full of joy, purpose, and peace through a relationship with God while hoping to inspire others along the way to do the same. Our mom was our inspiration for the podcast in the beginning and still is today, so we continue in her honor to share the unconditional love that we always felt from her, which was ultimately from God. Through our struggles, we have remained consistent with our weekly podcast, which has been an unexpected therapeutic outlet as we are still in the thick of grief. We hope that our openness in sharing helps others that are grieving to feel less alone, whether they are grieving the past year of craziness and change or the loss of a loved one. We have recently formed a grief group as well that we will be hosting once a month to create a space for sharing and community.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Our podcast is our passion, but each of us has full-time jobs as well! Lauren works in commercial construction management and real estate investing, Megan is a regional sales manager for Favor/HEB, and Kristen is a top-producing real estate agent in Nashville. We are most proud of our families and the unconditional love amongst all of us. Specifically, in regards to our podcast, we are most proud that every single part of it has been self-researched, taught, and implemented. The slogan Just Do It has truth behind it! What sets us apart is our ability to love and accept others for who they are, without judgment. Also, we feel that we are relatable through showing up authentically and being open and vulnerable.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
We absolutely believe in risk-taking; it’s a way of life for us! Our parents were risk-takers, and so it’s all we knew growing up. With that said, we like to think about risk-reward and strive to take as little risk as possible for the maximum amount of upside. So that level of risk could look very different- both big or small- in all situations. Starting our podcast was taking a risk. It cost time- educating ourselves, recording, editing, launching, marketing, etc. It cost some money- legal, subscriptions for a host, etc. Also, sharing our lives and being vulnerable can feel risky. Sharing our love for Jesus Christ as our savior can be seen as a risk as well. We have avoided this in the past at times for fear of being off-putting and driving away from people, but have realized we are willing to risk “losing” people/listeners to share our truth. Sometimes your truth can feel risky to share, but there is nothing more beautiful and authentic than your truth.
