Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Alexander White.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started taking pictures 50 years ago. I used to always see car accidents and was told that you could sell pictures to the newspapers. So I bought a camera. My mom had a Polaroid camera when I had graduated from high school and I would take her camera with me to junior college. Without her knowledge, I attended and would take pictures of some of the students and they paid me $2 per picture. Some days I made up to $30 per day. So I grew in the photography field as time went on. I’m self-taught and learned a lot from books and some videos about photography. Of course, the videos came much later.
I’ve photographed former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Halle Berry, John Legend, Tyreese, Mary Mary, and quite a few other people, including Officer Byrd from the Judge Judy Show, I photographed his wedding in New Jersey. I’ve had over 30 years in the radio broadcast industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was a deejay for several stations in the Bay Area, won a few awards and really cool acknowledgments. When I was on the radio, I met a lot of singers, Anita Baker, Luther Vandroos, IL Cool J, Janet Jackson, Teena Marie, Uncle Charlie Wilson (The Gap Band), just to name a few. My radio career spanned over 30 years. My radio career spawned into another field of endeavor… Voiceovers. I’ve been doing voiceovers for almost 30 years also. I’ve done commercials for McDonald’s, General Motors (six years), PGE Power Company, video games, Better Business Bureau, Uncle Nearest Tennessee Whiskey. One of my latest voiceover gigs is being one of the story-telling narrators on the Calm App. www.calm.com. You know the company that provides music, sounds, and storytelling to help you relax and fall asleep. In the last three years, I’ve voiced over 3,600 commercials/tags that have aired throughout the country. My voice has been on commercials that have won Emmys and a Telly Award. I never knew tv commercials could even win an Emmy. I also shoot videos, which was a natural extension of my photography skill-set. One more thing. I’ve been a preacher for almost 13 years. Preaching the Gospel of Jesus is one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, but it’s also a very rewarding experience.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve actually have had a pretty smooth road. The challenges have been trying to learn as much as I could about anything I wanted to be good at or in doing. Though I’ve been a photographer for over 50 years, I still don’t think I’ve learned enough. I don’t have a website to showcase my work. People say I need one or should get one. My answer has been, okay. I will… for the last several years. There are things that I would like to shoot, but sometimes I can’t find the time to do it. Sometimes I feel like there is not enough time in the day, but it is. I’m a kind of a workaholic when I’m on a project and barely get enough rest and sleep. It’s hard to turn the creative mind off. Did I mention that I’m a graphic designer also. I keep getting work. It keeps me busy, for which I’m very grateful to God for it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Being a photographer is what I’ve been pretty passionate about over the years. I’ve always been complimented on the lighting aspect of my photos, the color and brightness and how they stand out, but I also have a few dark and dramatic photos that I’ve done. I like photographing faces. One of my favorite photos is one I took when my daughter graduated from high and was receiving her diploma. I waited for an exact moment that when she turned and walked away from the presenter, the smile on her face was priceless. She had put her hand on her cap because of a slight wind and a Leigh around her neck was blowing in the wind and her gown had a little sway to it so the symmetry of that photo showing the joy and the happiness of that moment was absolutely beautiful. Because I’m a graphic designer, when I shoot, I bring a little bit of what else I can do with this photo besides just snapping the shutter. I use some of my photos in posters, flyers, or some other creative presentation of the shoot. I pay a great deal of attention to detail as I do with. Most things. If anything sets me apart from others, it’s the attention to detail and the utmost tenacity of the right moment. The thing I’m most proud of is being a dad to my daughter and support her in her endeavors and being the best husband to my wife as I can be.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Have a conversation with me and let’s see where our skills, gifts, and talents meet. I love working with others. I’ve learned that a lot of creative people surround us, and we just have to stay alert and be aware that people have something to offer. Referrals are always welcome.
