Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Sayles.
Kevin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Ft. Worth, Texas and spent most of my high school years at Paul Lawerence Dunbar High School but later graduated from Southwest High School in Ft. Worth. I spent 22 years of my life serving in the United States Navy and Retiring from The US Army. During my early years in the military, I developed a passion for producing music and audio engineering.
Over the years, as technology improved and the cost of recording equipment became affordable for most music creator to buy, I felt that the industry became saturated with artist settling for music creation at home vs going out and paying a professional to produce, record and master their music. I seen the writing on the wall very early so immediately, I transitioned from music to video. Owning my own video production studio has been a long-time dream. Over the past 11 years, I have been blessed to run my own content creation company VSE Media and is the sole owner of The V Network Roku Channel. VSE Media is a video marketing company that specialize in creating videos for business websites and social media platforms that helps convert potential clients into lifelong customers. Not only have I been working as the Creative Director of VSE Media, I have been blessed to write and produce a short film, The Birthday Ultimatum that it currently available on Amazon Prime and The V Network Roku channel. Every day I thank God for the challenges and finding success in my failures. My goal each day is to get better at being a business owner. How can I do things better today then what I did the day before. The greatest challenge has been changing my thought process from being a consumer to a business owner.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This process has not been easy at all. Trying to tap into your own destiny while helping someone else live in their destiny is very challenging. Working for someone else and trying to build your own business and brand has its pros and cons. The thing that I struggled with the most is not having enough time. Time is something that you can never get back once it’s gone. The old saying is “there is only 24 hours in a day,” and when you spend 40 to 60 hours a week working for someone else that leaves very little time to focus on business. On the other hand, starting out having a consistent source of income to provide for home and grow the business is a plus. Trying to find the balance between family, work and business would be challenging for the best of us. Making the decision to walk away from a 9 to 5 and be a business owner 100% has been my greatest obstacle.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most proud of being the owner of The V Network Roku Channel. When I established the channel in Sep 2020, I wasn’t totally clear on exactly what type of content I wanted to share to the world. As the months past the vision became a lot clearer. The whole idea was to give local content creators a platform to showcase their films and shows outside of YouTube and Amazon. I had to remind myself to never judge my success on how things look starting out. My ability to produce and develop content was one of the key elements in creating the I AM A POET SHOW which can now be viewed on The V Network Roku Channel. I am continuing to grow the channel and adding more content monthly.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe that in the next five years, Video Production and content creation will be at a demand that the creators can’t keep up. As a nation, we are flooded with content everyday, from social media, television and at times, text messages. Things will not slow down anytime soon, the demand for it will continue to grow until content creators can keep up.
