Meet Alex Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Lopez.

Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a wedding planner/coordinator based out of Dallas, TX. I started my wedding planning business in the same year that covid-19 decided to wreak havoc on the world! How’s that for perfect timing?! I’ve had an interest for party planning that dates back to my teens. I come from a family of creative ladies, from mom to aunts, sister, and cousins. I like to think I take after them, especially my mom when it comes to my love for party coordination. I remember applying for a “junior wedding planner” position when I was around 20. When I realized I would have to work weekends, I quickly decided that it wasn’t going to fly with my social life. At the time (lol but also, smh), I was young and it clearly wasn’t the right time. It wasn’t until my late 30’s and a whole lot of courage and encouragement that I finally took a big leap of faith and launched MI BODA with Alex.

I made the decision sometime in January of 2020. I had zero clue where to start, how I was going to land my first client, how to get my name out there, nothing! I went into this with nothing but faith and goals and ambition. I jumped off and hoped my parachute would open! By the grace of God, I landed my first three clients within the first two months in business. Coordinated my first wedding in March and a week later, we were shut down and in full-blown pandemic mode. My next two weddings were postponed and I thought I was pretty much done for the year and certain that I was going to have to put everything on hold. Next thing I know, I have brides to be, reaching out to inquire about my services. To my surprise, mid-year, I was only a couple weddings away to reaching my personal business goal for my first year in business. I felt, and feel, extremely blessed for every single one of my couples that have entrusted me with their special day. Everything fell into place from the very beginning, and that’s exactly what I needed to feel and know that I was on the right path. Weddings are finally back on and it’s exciting to finally be working with all the clients booked throughout the crazy year that was 2020.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it, fortunately, hasn’t been a super rough one, which is what helped convince me that I was on the right path. Going into something blindly and on your own is a scary feeling. I faced imposter syndrome, fear of the unknown, convincing myself that nobody needed my help because there’s a lot of wedding planners out there, and let’s not forget covid! Though covid-19 was the biggest hurdle, most of my struggles have been internal. It takes a lot of self-motivation and encouragement to keep moving forward and put full trust in yourself, needless to say… I talk to myself a lot! I’ve been blessed with amazing clients that never fail to tell me how grateful they are for all I do, and that helps to remind me I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. Hearing those “Thank you’s” and “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you” make the struggles all worth it!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in wedding planning/coordinating. I assist my couples with anything from planning the entire event to coordinating the day of. Sometimes I’m behind the scenes and other times I’m holding brides up during the vibora de la mar, to having to pop up mid-ceremony to hand my bride some water. It doesn’t matter how well you plan, something unplanned will always occur. My job is to ensure that my couples show up, get married and enjoy the night, leave the worries to me. I take on the stress that is ensuring a smooth day and night. Most don’t realize how much work goes into having a party.

No matter the size, the stress is the same. What should be a joyful and memorable time can result in a stressful evening that the host didn’t even get to enjoy. I’m there to make sure my client’s day is everything they wanted, I deal with any arising issues, and I joke that I often serve as a therapist as well, making it a win-win situation. I pride myself in being bilingual. One of the first questions often asked is “do you speak Spanish?” YES, yes, I do, I’m fluent in English, Spanish, and Spanglish! Brand-wise, I’m most proud that I’m able to serve my community, mi gente! As hispanics/latinos, we always want to handle things on our own, plus we have tia’s and tio’s that want to help. It’s nice to see that my fellow minorities are treating themselves more often these days, to wedding planners to help with the stressful parts of events, and keeping their tio’s as guests so that they too may enjoy the evening.

What does success mean to you?
Business-wise, I define success through fulfillment and happiness. When my couples express their gratitude and happiness for my work, that feels like success to me. My goal is to ensure your satisfaction with MI BODA with Alex, and when that’s achieved, I consider that a success!
