Life & Work with Sha Lee Hornsby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sha Lee Hornsby.

Hi Sha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve spent my entire career in the area of recruiting professionals at all levels, from administrative, technical and engineering roles to executive-level positions. My career started in Staffing. Since then, I’ve spent time recruiting Corporate, Consulting, Diversity and University recruitment—plus recruiting internationally as an expat in the Middle East, where I lived for eight years. In parallel to recruiting is a natural responsibility of advising those as jobseekers and on their career journey. So, after my second career break from baby #2, I launched Cool Careers podcast. This is a space that allows a professionals to celebrate their success while highlighting their personal career journey. Meanwhile, our audience learns from these journeys. There are no fast elevator rides to the top. We learn most of us are all on the stairs climbing together. Cool Careers Podcast is now on it’s the second season and now streaming on all major streaming platforms.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Typically, roads are not completely smooth. Of course-I have experienced struggles but my road has been proudly scenic! When we experience career momentum, it’s wise to keep it going. That’s not everyone’s story and being a Recruiter doesn’t exempt me as a normal jobseeker. I have experienced both voluntary and involuntary career breaks. Involuntary break via layoffs and long term voluntary career breaks after both pregnancies for my growing family. Hopping in and out of my career has allowed me to witness firsthand what many jobseeker(s) experience and a greater perspective to advise accordingly.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT PEOPLE and THEIR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES! What I do, as many recruiters do, we advise jobseekers. I serve as a tour guide, routing and navigating individuals during their job search and career journeys. The podcast highlights specific career paths so others can see a snap shot of a “successful” journey. We see people at their greatness but unsure how they have arrived. MY SPECIALTY are PEOPLE! A special feature of my podcast is about relationships and it’s important role while maneuvering through your career or even making career transitions. My ability to create and maintain healthy and long-lasting professional relationships brings me a sense of pride and joy. These relationships help me as an individual, a successful Recruiter, and now on my podcast. Many Career Coaches or Career Advising Professional’s backgrounds start in a space of counseling and coaching. Proudly, I have spent my career of 20+ years in the Human Resources/Talent Acquisition Recruiting space. My advising stems from practicality instead of theory which sets me apart from the most.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The industry is definitely changing, especially for jobseekers. The COVID pandemic has pushed these efforts a bit sooner. Technology is replacing recruiting staff in some portions of the interviewing process. To save time, corporations are utilizing AI software to host interviewing candidates. Later, the recruiting team will review and progress applicants through the interview process accordingly. This big technological push is going to demand applicants and talent seekers to be more savvy with technical software. I have already received many questions on this topic. In response, I have an instructional video on my website on the do’s and don’ts for an AI proctored recorded interview.
