Today we’d like to introduce you to Amethyst Moak.
Hi Amethyst, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I kind of fell into the beauty industry. I come from a family where everyone goes to college a gets a degree. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I graduated high school, so I turned down scholarships and told my family that I wasn’t going to college. I decided to take a gap year to figure out what I was passionate about. I started working at Ulta because I like makeup. They had an opening for a salon receptionist and asked me if I wanted the job.
While I worked as a receptionist there, I was always asking questions and trying to learn how hair worked. The stylists I worked with convinced me to go to hair school, so I went to go check out a few schools to see which one I liked best. As soon as I walked in the doors to Paul Mitchell the School Arlington, I knew that was the place for me. I learned so much in my time there and will forever be grateful for the teachers I had. I love styling hair, so the past few years, I’ve been working at Drybar and doing wedding hair and makeup. Just recently, I joined up with an amazing stylist and we opened Savage Shears Studio!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not. I feel like everyone thinks doing hair is just playing with hair. What no one tells you about is the missed lunches, the back pain, all the extra hours put in behind the scenes, and the toxic environments that exist within salons. A big part of my experience has been trying to find a salon home, only to find that the people I was working with didn’t want to help me. They just wanted an extra pair of hands. I’ve been so grateful for Drybar creating such an accepting environment for me to work on and my business partner, Britney, for believing in me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My favorite part of doing hair is hands down the braids and updos! That’s when my job feels easy and makes me the happiest because I feel like I can be my most creative self.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Fort Worth because the opportunities are endless. Everything you could want or need is nearby, and if Fort Worth doesn’t have it, Dallas isn’t far. What I like least about this city is probably the weather. I love being outside but our weather is so unpredictable that it makes it difficult.
