Today we’d like to introduce you to Cash Anglin.
Hi Cash, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a kid with a little point-and-shoot camera, using garage work lights to light my subjects for better images. As my interest grew, I realized I needed something that was a little more professional-grade so I stepped up to a used Canon 5d. This is where I really started cutting my teeth in the craft of photography. It would be a couple more years when I realized that I wanted to take this journey to the next level and make it a legitimate career. At this time, I have sold off all of my old photography equipment and added brand new latest and greatest gear. Sony mirrorless cameras are my new workhorse for building my new career.
With the growing popularity of smartphones and their cameras getting better and better, I knew I had to be at the top of my game to be successful. So I had my mission, I knew I had to create images that a smartphone could not. I had always been drawn to lighting so using flashes became one of my biggest tools to create unique photography. They give me that pop of light to ensure that bold look that I am drawn to producing. I recall a conversation with a makeup artist, we were discussing my style and that I was concerned that I wasn’t getting much business at the time. I was contemplating altering it a bit to fit the ‘norm’ to try to get more business. She said “don’t even think about it, your work is great. People just don’t know they need it yet because it’s different than what’s out there.” That statement meant a lot and kept me on the path that I’ve always been on. Creating something new and different, that tells a story is my goal with every client.
Enter 2020, the world began to crumble and everything came to a halt. COVID 19 stopped everything in its tracks but it also gave me time to reflect. “What am I going to do, how can I do things differently, what makes me different?” In a time when we had to be disconnected, I realized the connections are what we need the most. For me, connecting with my clients is a huge part of why I love what I do and it became a goal with every project. I want to know their story, I want everyone to feel like I am a friend photographing them. It’s important that there is a level of comfort for all involved. If someone is uneasy or uncomfortable in front of the camera, it shows in the images. When it’s just friends hanging out, the photos are taken to a whole new level.
Today, my wedding photography is recovering from the pandemic faster than I had anticipated as well as my portrait sessions. It’s very exciting and I am looking forward to more connections and creative journeys with my photography.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Photography is one of those industries that can be very saturated. Everyone with a camera phone or even an upgraded, handheld camera asks themselves why do they need to hire a photographer? They can do it themself or their friend, cousin, or sibling can do it. Without question, photography is an art. The angles, the lighting, the edits, and the overall vision is an art. Anyone can point and shoot to get a photo, but is it memorable, does it speak to you, take your breath away, trigger an emotion? With so many people moonlighting as a photographer, there tends to be what I call ‘A Race to the Bottom’. Who can do it the cheapest, what’s the least amount I can pay for this product? Something I encourage people to consider is the time and equipment your photographer has invested in their trade. This doesn’t come overnight and requires passion and vision. Especially with wedding photography, having this experienced professional is crucial to the success and memory of the day’s moments.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The term I hear the most to describe my work is “cinematic.” I gravitate towards dramatic images. I am inspired by brightly illuminated scenery and people. Colorful, contrasting sunsets and clouds are my favorite backdrop for the ‘magical’ feeling I try to ignite when someone views their photos. My goal when revealing my photos to a client is happy tears, ear-to-ear smiles, and ‘wow’s!’
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know that luck has played any part. I continually make connections with new people and create new images. This work is what keeps my trajectory going forward in my craft.
