Bobby, it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
My name is Bobby Coston and I am a working actor based out of Dallas, Texas. I also create short films in my off-seasons.
How do you learn about your character, before you embody it?
After I’ve read the script a couple of times and understood the specifics of my character, I make note of the details. Whether I make them up or they’re written in the script, I use the details in the writing to make an educated assumption. Are they from down south, or up north? Do they listen to hip-hop or country? Do they eat pop-tarts or cereal? I have a list similar to this that I’ll use if the character is more complex.
Once I have this it’s all about practicing my lines in character. It won’t work for everyone, but for me, it’s a form of method-acting that lets me live as that character in that specific moment. So far, I think it’s worked.
What’s been the hardest thing for you in this industry transitioning into a pandemic?
Staying proactive and productive. When everything is virtual, and for the most part on your own time, it’s a struggle to stay proactive. Being at home is a blessing and a curse. Staying focused to stay on top of self-tapes, resumes, photos, social media, etc. is crucial now that things are mostly virtual.
What’s been the most challenging aspect for you this past year, overall?
Pivoting. Early this year my beloved agent passed away. She was great and wanted nothing, but success for everyone. Once she passed, I had to make a tough decision on where I wanted to continue pursuing my career. I am now with The Campbell Agency, but looking to expand in this southern market.
What are your 4 golden tips to get started acting?
Assuming you’ve done the leg work, and you know that this won’t be a ‘success overnight’ type of thing.
1.) Headshots. – They are the MOST important thing in getting you auditions. Which is what you’ll be doing the majority of the time. Find an ACTUAL headshot photographer (there are some reasonably priced people with a great product), and save to get them done professionally.
2.) Classes. – Take a class online or in person, but make sure you are constantly training. Not just for the craft, but because getting an agent with no experience, will heavily depend on your training.
3.) Get in front of a camera. – Student films, web series, commercials, even creating your own content. Use that to your advantage. All these things can be added to a resume. All these things will help you get used to being in front of a camera. Student films are the closest thing to a real set. Use that to your advantage.
4.) Don’t try to move. – A lot of actors think they need to move to L.A., or somewhere else to really make it. You’ll find you’re struggling more than you’re booking. Make a name for yourself where you are, then slowly start broadening your reach to neighboring union states. Wait until you’re actually consistently booking before trying to move to the boulevard.
