Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah.
Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! I’m Hannah Masten, and I am a Dallas native currently residing in Denton. I was pretty much clueless during college and ended up with a degree in something I might never use. After landing my first “real” job, I started dipping my toes into the finer side of skincare. A few years later, armed with a genuine obsession, I wondered if I could ever land a career in the beauty industry. Ultimately, what started as a hobby turned into deeply considering business ideas that I could start on my own. I just wanted a way to help people feel good in their skin, both figuratively and literally, without all the work. Enter sheet masks; they are simple, mess-free, and most importantly, they work! I thought, man; this could be a fun subscription box for individuals who want that dewy glow but don’t want to go through the hassle of finding a trustworthy brand or the cleanup of clay/jelly masks.
Somewhere between developing business concepts, COVID-19 came into play, and within a few months, I was laid off. That was a really low moment for me, and it honestly took me a few months to shake off the self-doubt that losing my job gave me. Eventually, I thought, “If not now, when?” and that’s what sparked the whole genesis of The Dew Beauty. I launched the subscription offerings in December of 2020, and I’m proud to say I’ve already generated quite a few subscribers. The whole process has been an enjoyable learning experience so far, and it might sound cheesy, but I honestly can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ha! I would say, no, the road has been far from smooth. I source many of my products directly from Korea, seeing as they tend to be the gold standard in skincare, and I’d say they’re often ten steps ahead of the game in product development and effectiveness. While ordering and sourcing the best products I can find sounds great, in theory, there’s been a huge learning curve regarding how much product I should order and when to order it. You see, I’m not the best planner, and one of my goals with the business is to have new masks for my subscribers and customers to try each month, and EVERY MONTH until NOW, I’ve been short on masks by at least half a month. In fact, in April, I had to pivot and decided to do a whimsical (fun way of saying random, ha) box of masks just to give myself time for my new order to come in; and I was still late.
It has also been interesting learning how to boost myself on social media and consistently post and generate content. I’m far from influencer status in my personal life, so this was a whole new ballgame for me. While it hasn’t been easy, I have enjoyed pushing myself to do this. No regrets.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Dew Beauty. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Dew Beauty is a thoughtfully curated month-to-month or subscription-based skincare box that aims to take the stress and decision-making out of self-care. We specialize in sheet masks currently but are exploring other avenues in the world of face masks such as clay, jelly, and other jarred options.
When it comes to what makes us different, I think that the accessibility of our products is something that I believe sets us apart. We currently offer our boxes at a price point that we hope enables individuals who might not normally treat themselves to quality skincare to have the opportunity to try something new.
Ultimately I hope that anyone reading this takes it as a sign to bet on yourself if you think you have a concept or business idea that might work. I feel an immense amount of pride knowing how hard I’ve worked and that The Dew Beauty has done as well as it has. I’m hopeful that it will continue to grow large enough to make it my full-time job eventually.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I don’t really have a mentor, but I am lucky enough to have the best group of people around me to support me and help me get creative. While I am the sole owner of this business, I can proudly say its taken a village to raise this baby of mine.
I do, however want to thank my partner, who has been my greatest business mentor, as he already successfully owns two businesses with his two brothers (shout out Denton Skate Supply and Station Motors). He is always down to help with the logistics; whether it’s making the boxes or deciding how to spend my money, he is there to provide help. I am really lucky to have him by my side.
