Meet Kennedi Monet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedi Monet.

Hi Kennedi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I always knew since a little girl that I’ve always wanted to dance. I used to stand if front of the tv and mock the girls on the music videos! It’s actually kind of funny. One day I auditioned for drill team in middle school, I never had any training but I still made the team! After that, I took a break from dancing, I was really discouraged at the time, I was never making routines and I never could figure out why. So I decided to run track through high school.

My senior year of high school I took a dance elective and I realized again how much I loved to dance. So I tried out for panther dolls at Prairie View A&M University and made the team! From that day, moving forward, I told myself I will never stop dancing ever again. I eventually left the team but that did not stop me from dancing. I thought long and hard about how can I keep dancing, choreographing, and growing without being on an actual team. So it all came to me, I’ve been wanting to choreograph dances and teach since I was young, so why not make that my reality. I ended up coming up with “K Monet Movement,” which is the name of my business. I wanted to not only teach choreography but also install that confidence and passion back into every woman who has lost it like I have. Show these women that you can do anything you want, be anything you want, and feel great working towards that.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest road for me but I can’t complain too much either. I’ve been trying to teach my dance classes since I was a sophomore in college, which was the year 2019. I was going to start at Prairie View but It never worked out for me because they never had availability for me to teach. I kept trying and trying for months but It just wasn’t working out. Also, ever since middle school, I’ve always thought I couldn’t dance as good as other people, and maybe that’s why I never made routines. It made me lose my passion for a very long time and also affected my self-esteem. So, it was a very bold choice for me to start teaching my very own choreography.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I teach dance classes at the rush dance studio, classic dance crew, soundbox, and I’m currently teaching at shaped studio by Kayla G. I also choreograph music videos and shows for upcoming artists. I also dance in them as well. I’m not the choreographer all of the time but I like it that way too, I learn a lot from other people.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising about me that most people don’t know is that I’m very in-tuned with spirituality and reading.
