Today we’d like to introduce you to Dyson Styles.
Dyson, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
To be completely honest, I wasn’t someone who grew up with a passion for doing hair, nor did I go to school for it until after the fact. I got my start or rather introduction to the hairstyling industry in the most unorthodox of ways. As faith would have it, I was attending church with a friend and as the collection plate came around, I noticed the amount he put in.
Now to this day, I’m not sure if he noticed the look on my face or if it was the fact that he knew me so well that when I asked how he was able to do that, he wasn’t offended. He simply replied he’d recently began working as a hairstylist and that kind of money was the norm. So, for me it became a no-brainer, if that’s where that kind of money was, then that would be where you’d find me. My first couple of months starting could be described as horrible. I often thought about quitting and was even referred to as the worst in my cosmetology class at one point. So, to be at the point I am now, I can attribute to nothing but God and my grind. I put the time in my craft to get to the point I am now, and nothing feels better than seeing the results of years dedicated to nothing else.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been far from smooth, but that’s a statement anyone who’s working towards something can relate to. For me personally, most of my issues stemmed from me and my own way of thinking in addition to trying to please every client that sat in my chair. Now don’t get me wrong, that’s 1000% the aim and should be for everyone in this business, but it’s impossible. It took me a while to get that and as someone who wanted instant gratification, this business can be everything but that at times. The hair industry is and will always be one that requires groundwork; once my perspective switched to understand that, things became much easier.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am Dyson Styles a Dallas, Texas, hairstylist specializing in medium to long natural hair, but capable of so much more. I’ve serviced clients from every walk of life in most major southern metropolis cities and even ventured out to the west coast with my talents. I’m most known for the experience I provide for my clients in addition to whatever I do with their hair. Women leave my chair feeling better on the outside and inside, as I’m a real person who makes investments in those I work with. I’m an influencer for my clients and all who know me, often turning clients on to new styles, fashion trends and being in the know when it comes to my city. I’m most proud of my journey and the fact that my mother is now proud of me. Hearing her say those words meant the world to me.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory ironically reminds me of the period I decided to begin learning how to do hair. I was in the third grade when I brought the violin home to my mother with aspirations of learning. She used to sit and listen to me for hours, knowing I sounded horrible and was probably giving her a headache. But she would sit there with a smile every time and just keep right on encouraging me. The simplicity of those moments in addition to her genuine spirit, remain presently on my heart and mind to this day.
