Rising Stars: Meet Karissa Bowlby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karissa Bowlby.

Hi Karissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got into modeling through the DFW car community. I’ve always had a passion for cars and mechanics and will be going into the Air Force to be an aircraft mechanic. My first shoot was at a Dallas market hall car show, where I was mistaken as one of the models. I continued to network with other photographers after that to make something different and creative and have been doing it since! COVID slowed down my career path, so the past year has given me more time to model and make exciting content with fellow creatives!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My family has suffered some heavy tragedies over the years. In overcoming the challenges those created for me personally, I have become distrusting of people and developed severe social anxiety. Before that, I would’ve considered myself a social butterfly. I recently was diagnosed with ADHD and OCD after seeking therapy and support. Prior to that, I had a lot of difficulty with personal relationships. Not to mention, it made those school years a nightmare. I began to isolate myself and felt alienated from others. Not knowing what was wrong with me before my diagnosis made me feel like a freak. I had no self-esteem or confidence. Through modeling, I’ve been able to realize my value and self-worth.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My career goal and life-long dream is to enlist in the Air Force and go into the field of engineering. In addition to that, I always embrace the opportunity to be around and work with animals and special needs children. Having an autistic brother has allowed me to have a higher understanding and empathy for children with disabilities; especially, those with Autism.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
If I were to continue modeling, I’d love to take the modeling down a more creative route and do concepts that have meaning and depth. Such as using myself as a canvas to convey emotion and represent important causes.
