Meet Melva Williams of Something Special Styling Salon in Irving

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melva Williams .

Melva, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved hair I knew what I wanted to do when I was about five years old. Watching someone do hair when I was a kid was like watching a baker make his famous cake or watching a chef prepare a meal. My mom began to lose her hair when I was just a kid and I promised her that when I was older I will find answers and solutions for hair loss.

Once I became a stylist I’ll begin to see the problem all over again period I started asking women a series of questions and I noticed they were all on the same lines are things going on internal. So I began to do research into diet, exercise, stress, hormones, metabolism, medication, and hydration and how these things affected our hair. I came across a wealth of information and knew that I had to share this with not only my client but the general public as well. I began educating clients, stylist, Beauty professionals, and the general public on how medical issues and her issues are related.

I love everything about hair but wanted to give my clients more than just a great Style but a healthy head of hair. So I began doing workshops and seminars. This led to me becoming a holistic educator. I have been a stylist for 27 years, a salon owner for 15 years, and an educator for five years. I believe that this information is so important that I’ve registered with the state and Licensing Board for beauty professionals to receive continuing education credits when they receive this education.

I also teach business classes, salon management and training, and mentoring. Doing all the research help me to become a product developer I knew what cause hair loss now I wanted to find out what makes the hair grow. I research what key essential ingredients the hair needed in order to grow then research those products and came up with silky soft. Along with the research, knowledge, the product silky soft and client participation we’ve been able to grow back a lot of hair. I love giving women hope my motto is we restore hair and confidence.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the struggles has been balance between my passion,my career, my faith, family and mentoring.

Please tell us about Something Special Styling Salon.
Something special styling salon Specializes in healthy hair. We Restore hair and confidence. Here you don’t get to just have it your way we inform the client was best for their hair taking into consideration their vision and create a look where they can have both. I’m known as the healthy hair specialist I’m usually sought out when women have Hair issues. People normally tell them go to Melva she can grow it back!

I started Mending Tresses which is our brand to help to educate Beauty professionals all over the world about business and hair and that’s what I’m most proud of. This usually doesn’t always bring in money but I get a joy out of helping my peers.

What sets me apart from everyone else is that this is what I believe I was called to do. Because my mom lost her hair at such a young age I watched her be devastated and heartbroken and so this it’s not just a job for me each and every case is personal.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories from childhood is the teachings that I received from my grandfather about business, people and life in general. He was loved and his community because he helped so many people and he never looked for anything in return. He taught me that whatever you do in life never step over or on people always give a hand up.
He would tell me whatever you do in life put everything you have into it give your all and have no regrets. Because of this it made me feel like nothing is unreachable or untouchable.
