Today we’d like to introduce you to Aubrey Sears.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
If you would’ve told me back in 2013 I would be a Makeup Artist I would’ve told you that was impossible. I was a special education (resource) student with a number of disabilities and a tomboy temperament. All I knew was that I wanted something different for myself.I was a bag in the wind looking for something to make me happy. I love helping people so I knew I wanted a career involving helping others. After I left college I enrolled in cosmetology school. I eventually left half way through because I wasn’t satisfied. After a while I decided to look for makeup programs and found TINT. Going into the admissions office I wasn’t planning to enroll but I did. I was blindsided the first week. I panicked, cried, sobbed and all. I couldn’t take the pressure so I left. I allowed doubt and self destruction consume me so much I had to let it go. After reevaluating myself I decided to go back but I wasn’t genuinely ready. After leaving once again I told myself “no matter what I have to finish”. I re enrolled February 2020 and COVID happend in March 2020. That transition was extremely tough. Going from in class learn to virtual learning made me nervous. I’m more of a hands on learner but I was willing to adjust. Things finally started looking up. My final clock out was scheduled. Then the unthinkable happened.. my mom caught COVID in October. She went to the hospital for a while. Then we had to quarantine and that set me back. When our quarantine period ended I went in to overdrive. I finally became a certified makeup artist. Now I pride myself on my work and client interactions. I love helping people see their beauty with or without makeup. I always tell people that your imperfections make you you. I always want someone to feel beautiful from the inside out.I love what I do and I’m grateful for the blessing every day. I hope to create a non profit that teach people how to do their own makeup as well as doing it for them. I especially want to do it for the disabled and under privileged community. I feel everyone deserves to feel their very best with or without makeup.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been filled with potholes. Between my physical and mental health I went on a roller coaster. Depression is something serious. I was always so hard on myself. I was struggling financially as well. I use to compare my work to others and get discouraged. I didn’t know how good I was until I decided to look at everything I’m a totally different way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love doing makeup. I get to meet amazing people and make a impact on their lives. I so proud of the fact I can make a client feel comfortable. I’ve learned that as long you listen and be receptive you’ll succeed in any situation. It’s all about listening to your client and giving them exactly what they want. I do all types of makeup’s natural, glam, six, bridal, airbrush etc. I never want to be put in a box when it comes to my artistry and career. I’m going to alway evolve and learn. I’ll always one up myself because I want to be better then I was.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’d advise anyone to let go of fear and step out on faith. This business is all about dedication and sacrifice. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and embrace every bit of the journey. If you find someone you’d like to mentor you just ask.Get in Facebook groups that line up with what you want to do. Practice your craft on family and friends. Post your work even if it’s on yourself. Make like minded friends you can bounce ideas off of. Don’t ever be afraid to speak up. Just remember everything takes time.
