Meet Ricky Cova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Cova.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I was always surrounded by music. My dad was a huge fan of classic rock and Spanish hip hop. Around the age of 13, I decided I wanted to learn to play guitar. Luckily, my high school had a music program which was like the school’s Tejano band but most of the students were into rock and metal so that’s really where I learned my basics. I was always discovering new genres and styles of music so my musical pallet was always expanding. Around this time I had started my first band and decided I wanted to record the music we were creating. So as a jobless teen boy I sold anything I could to try to afford whatever equipment I could. I recorded my first record with $100 set of drum mics, a tiny mixer and just routing everything into the mic input in my computer using free software. This was the beginning of my recording engineering career. I fell in love with the art and realized I enjoyed helping people record their music and helping their vision. 12 years later and now I have my own studio and amazing artists I work with that I can call friends.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely hasn’t been easy. For years I did a lot of free work for close friends or even my own stuff. For a while I just felt like I wasn’t good enough to be charging people for work, there’s for sure a big learning curve so I would spend days just watching YouTube videos and research on online forums. There have been times I wanted to give up just because I wouldn’t have the time for it or I just want to make much income from it, but every time I would step away from it, it always found a way back to me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Recording Engineer/Producer. I specialize in recording vocals and song composition. I feel like I’m known for bringing that “Wow” factor to artist’s music and amplifying their vision. One project I was really proud of, was that I recorded a song for my band “UNITYTX”, and our label was completely ok with the quality and gave us the go to release my work. I don’t feel like I’m any different than the next producer, but I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of most genres which helps me out a lot.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Perseverance and positivity. I’ve hit many roadblocks and There’s always a solution to any problem. The answer is just not to give up and stay positive and creative
