Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Calahan-Goodman.
Elijah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Photography started for me as a little toddler. As a toddler you always see me with a toy camera or a Polaroid or a disposable camera everywhere I went. Cameras growing up always fascinated me far as the flash or the shutter sound. My fascination with cameras have made me start collecting vintage cameras from local vintage and antique shops my favorite place to go to get vintage cameras is Lula B’s. I believe photography runs in my blood my grandfather was a photographer in his early 20s and I’m following right in his footsteps in my 20s with photography. Whether it’s behind the camera or in front of the camera there’s a camera nearby me majority of my time. Being photogenic is my natural born nature when I’m with my friends they always see me taking selfies or I try to take pictures of them we have a little modeling shoot nothing fancy, because that’s what I’m passionate about is photography. Photography for me is a visual language that creates priceless memories for years to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have definitely hit a few bumps in a road. The challenges that I face are not having enough downtime to just really understand the fundamentals of photography. I’ve also had troubles financially finding the right camera to fit my needs. To me photography is more than just taking pictures is creating priceless memories that will last forever. Being a photographer you have to think outside the box in a short amount of time, you have to be very creative yet simple. Determination and motivation has really got me back on track to face my challenges head-on.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
King Melanin Photography specializes in portrait, freelance, and nature including animals photography. Everyday life is my canvas and with the canvas I paint a vivid picture through the lens. My proudest moment is uploading to social media and getting likes and comments from all over the world I’ve gotten people from places like England, Australia, and many many miles away.
