Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Burns.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have had a very short life with many challenges, losses, ups and downs. From teen mom, nursing assistant, medication aide, emergency medical services, to nurse, to widow, to grandmother, to business owner and entrepreneur with a whole lot in between. I started in healthcare at 18 years old. I spent 24 years in healthcare only to realize it was not what I was most passionate about. In nursing school, I remember planning out in my mind how I would open a Med Spa and how it would be run, the look, the smell, and right down to the type of employees I would hire. That was in 2007. Life got in the way of those plans.
Skincare has been something I have been interested in for as far back as I can remember. My grandmother always made sure to remind me of how important it was to take care of your largest organ. As life put up hurdles, I continued to jump them. Many times are falling, but never stopping, never giving up, and always finishing the race.
In 2013, I took a position as Spa Director in a Med Spa. This was what I considered a dream job at the time. However, I was not just satisfied with managing the team; I realized that I wanted to be the one helping people with their skin concerns. Life as we know it continued to happen. I left this job to be an orthopedic nurse. I absolutely loved the doctor I worked with and really thought to be “in love” with orthopedics. In reality, I loved the doctor so much that I set aside what I loved. I even enrolled in school to finish my BSN. Finally, my husband, fiance at the time, said. “I know nobody tells Megan what to do, but are you sure this is what you want?” “Are you doing this because this is all you know?” The happiest I have seen you was at the MedSpa doing what you love. and you were so good at it” At first, I was thinking in my mind, “who asked you?” Laughingly, and after a week of careful thought, I realized he was right! I dropped all of my classes and enrolled in a cosmetology program.
Fast forward to October 2018. This is when Lavish Beauty & Skin Bar was founded. I opened my doors in November of 2018. At that time, it was just me in a 137 sqft room with a big dream. In 2019, I had grown so much that I was ready to make a move to a storefront. November of 2019, we signed the papers for that storefront. Lavish Beauty & Skin Bar once again opened the doors, this time in a 1700 sqft storefront six weeks before a pandemic hit. We have been able to maintain and flourish since the pandemic and continue to grow. I now have four employees and three other businesses located inside Lavish. We are blessed and happy to serve our community with a safe, friendly, and professional environment with the best customer service.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not a smooth road. My family would tell you that nothing has ever come easy for me and that I tend to do things the hard way. I definitely stay true to that statement. Growing quite fast as been a struggle. Opening up a storefront in the middle of a pandemic has been a struggle to say the least. Knowing when to let things go has been the biggest struggle. I have learned that I cannot do it all, and I have had to use a lot of blind faith to make things happen.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lavish Beauty & Skin Bar. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Lavish Beauty & Skin Bar specializes in skin revision and Microblading services. Although we have a long list of many other services, our hallmark is helping people with their skin. We are known for transforming skin. What sets us apart from others is our excellent customer service and attention to detail. We pride ourselves in being the best. We want everyone that steps into our building to feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
I am most proud of being nominated for one of the “Best of DFW” our clients have taken the time out of their busy lives to nominate us to The Dallas Morning News. We are truly blessed with the best. We show up every day to make sure our clients have the best experience every time they come. We truly love and cherish our clients. After 24 years in healthcare, I can honestly say that what I do know is the most gratifying. There is something to be said when someone can walk out of our business with their head held high and no longer feel insecure about their skin. They leave feeling like they can “be the skin they’re in” with utmost confidence.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I absolutely love Skin in The City podcast by Glowskincare LA, I also love Good Skin Circle by Ageless Ashley. These ladies have been in the industry a long time and help give some of the best tips and tricks for our industry. These ladies are quite the inspiration for this old lady.
