Meet Katy Portillo of Susie’s Snack Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Portillo.

Hi Katy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Susie’s Snacks simply started as a mother/daughter duo who wanted to make healthy dog snacks for their pup, Susie. From there, the business has grown and expanded more than we could’ve ever imagined. What started as just a few healthy snacks has now expanded into not only the dog treats but also a line of private label dog kibble and our own line of CBD products for pets. Within the next six months, Susie’s Snack Shop will also be expanding, moving into a space double the size we’re in now and adding a DIY Dog Wash station!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I always like to say that I’ve definitely taken “the road less traveled” in life, and that certainly rings true in my business. One of our biggest roadblocks that everyone can relate to would definitely be having to navigate our way through a pandemic. From pivoting and trying to make sure we stayed compliant with the ever changing standards and rules, we are fortunate to say that we have navigated our way through these rough waters and hoping we are starting to see the light at the end of what has been a VERY long tunnel.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Susie’s Snack Shop?
Here at Susie’s Snacks, we’re all about the dogs! We care about bringing not just healthy and nutritious but also tasty eats and treats to our favorite furry four-legged friends. From the snacks we hand make to our locally sourced/ locally produced dog kibble, we take pride in the fact that we know where and what ingredients go in just about everything we make. We like to say that we live by the standard, “if we wouldn’t eat it ourselves, why would we feed it to our dogs?”

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that although Denton seems to get bigger by the day, we still try to hold true to our small-town roots. Denton can be a very supportive community for small businesses and entrepreneurs and I’m lucky to call it my hometown. The drawback to Denton? Never ending road construction -_-
