Today we’d like to introduce you to Rusheika Terry.
Rusheika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started back in 2007 when I was eager to make my daughter’s first birthday cake! Well, it turned out horrible and I ended up dropping the cake on the way to the table. After that horrible event, I began baking treats for friends, family and anyone I thought needed a cake. Eventually, I fell in love with decorating cakes and I was blessed to get a job at Publix Supermarket. I learned how to decorate cakes with speed and grace. I quit my job and began making custom cakes from home. This allowed me to be more creative and take bigger risks with my cakes. My business began to grow, but before it could take off, my family and I had to move to Texas for my husband’s job.
Due to the relocation, I decided to get a job at Albertsons Grocery Store as a 5 Star Cake Decorator. Albertson’s gave me the creative freedom to do everything I wanted from an artist’s perspective. Within a couple of months, the cake sales quadruple and we become the number 1 bakery in the district. After four years of working for Albertsons, I decided to quit my job to pursue my dream of owning my own cake business. Now, here I am growing and loving my business and being able to make people’s special day just a little bit sweeter!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not, Being in such an industry that is ever-changing and really oversaturated with bakers/bakeries, there has been challenges! As a first-time entrepreneur with very little guidance or mentorship and the definition of “ignorance is bliss”, I was faced with a few challenges. Some of the roadblocks have been organization, confidence in my work/skills, schedule and of course pricing and not selling myself short.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in custom cakes and treats for all special occasion such as birthdays, weddings, etc. I am proud to provide buttercream cakes that are not overly sweet but delicious and can be enjoyed by everyone. My number one priority is to make my clients’ vision come to life and to give them one less thing to stress about. It is always an honor to be the sweetest part of any special celebration and memory! I tend to go above and beyond for all of my clients especially my little one because I love to see the excitement and joy on their faces when they see their cake.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I believe one of the most important qualities to be successful in business is having good communication skills and listening to your customer’s needs and wants. If your customers are satisfied and happy, your business will show and flourish. I want all my clients to feel special no matter how big or small the occasion is.
