Meet Roneka Turner of Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roneka Turner.

Hi Roneka, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Oak Cliff. Once I left home I moved to West Dallas projects. At that time, I only had one daughter, N’Keiveia. I was a single mother with no help at all. It was just me and her against the world. I never wanted my daughter to have to struggle like I did with family issues, low or no income, etc. So, I was in survival mode. Which at that time, I had to do what I had to do to take care of me and my daughter. Somethings I’m proud of and some I’m not. I was on low income housing and I definitely did not want to be on it for the rest of my life. When N’Keiveia turned 5 years old, I found out that I was pregnant with my second daughter, Kei’Ann.

I was totally unhappy with myself. Because I was at a point where I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I had to make some quick changes. Not only did I have one kid looking up at me, now I have two daughters that I couldn’t let down. So failure was definitely NOT an option. That is when I enrolled in school to become a Medical Assistant. Once I graduated I began working for a doctor that taught me a lot. I worked there until she closed her practice in 2012. I am currently working for a lab as a Phlebotomist and I have been there since 2013.

When the world shut down, I was considered “ESSENTIAL”. I have been working nonstop. So when everybody started losing their jobs, I had to think of something that I could come up with to keep money coming in just in case I lost my job. Nobody knew where they were headed in the employment world, I thought about selling cute bags with essentials. Like things that included items that you would need for a great night or a last minute rendezvous,

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road. With any business, you end up spending more than what you end up making in the beginning. So I had to kind of step out on faith a little bit and focus on my main goal and that was making my customers happy and giving them a good deal.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hard worker that takes pride in my work. I work 7 days a week and works at Kultured Essentials on the weekend. I make Spinnanight Bags or “Heaux Bags”, we also sell Exotic Drinks, and prepare home cooked meals to sell. We make sure that our bags have everything that you need for that unexpected or expected overnight stay. I am mostly proud of how much Kultured Essentials has grown.

We have worked so hard to get to where we are now, And we have a lot more in store for the future. I think what sets me apart from others is I am not trying to make a lot of money fast. What I mean by that is I’ don’t want to charge my customers a lot of money. I’m trying to make sure that my customers continue to shop with me and refer other people to me because of my prices and products. I’m known for giving great deals.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Well, I will just say this….The people that I deal with in our city are very big on support. What I like least about our city is that we are so divided. It’s enough money and opportunity for everybody. God gives everybody the same 24hours 7 days a week.
