Today we’d like to introduce you to Nishal Thomas.
Nishal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My husband, Mathew and I are the creators of Sucrer Patisserie. Although an interior designer by profession, during the COVID pandemic of 2020, we decided to take my hobby full time and pursue my true calling.
The love of sweets and baking has always been in our family with my sister and mom both being bakers. Combining baking and creative design to make sweet treats has become second nature to make people happy. I knew I had made the right choice, and that my love of pastry would continue to grow.
My journey with baking started when our eldest daughter had her 1st birthday and I wanted a “Pinterest-worthy” table for her party but didn’t have the budget for it. So I baked all the goodies myself- personalized sugar cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, and macarons. I was encouraged to start selling but didn’t think too much of it at the time. I have thought about owning a business before, but I would keep making excuses for myself. By August 2020 I knew it was time.
Our business journey started with macarons, first to friends and family and then on to others, just because word of mouth is such a powerful tool. So many words to describe the little treats- delicious, beautiful, elegant, so many flavor combinations. The feeling of accomplishment when you bake the perfect macaron is simply unexplainable and all because I can’t resist a good challenge.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not! It is a challenge every day and has been since the very start, especially for a perfectionist like me. This isn’t a career you can do if you don’t truly have a passion for every single facet of the business. With no formal business training, my husband and I have been learning how to handle each part of this business as we come to it. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t learn something new.
One of my biggest challenges along this journey has been trying to balance and manage your time between making the business grow and being a mom to our two girls. It hasn’t been easy but by the grace of God, I have been surrounded by an amazing family that’s always supported and stepped in as needed.
Marketing my business is another challenge. With being a cottage baker, getting your name out to the right avenues, which in turn translates to sales can be a hit and miss sometimes. The main objective has been to choose whatever makes me happy and keep working towards my idea of success!
As you know, we’re big fans of Sucrer Patisserie. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Sucrer Patisserie is a home-based bakery operating under the Texas cottage food law. Sucrer in French means to sweeten and that’s exactly what we set out to do- with new flavors releasing each month! (We are currently at 61 flavors.)
We specialize in French macarons and the quality and design are what really sets it apart from others. Coming from an artistic background, I treat all my macarons like artwork. There truly is nothing that beats a freshly baked macaron! We also offer mac-sicles, mac-rownies, drop cookies, cupcakes, and even macaron cakes!
From start to finish, a lot of great detail is put into everything. When you receive an order from us, everything from the dessert to the packaging was handled with great care and love. I am most proud of my business when a client loves their macarons so much that they tell their friends about them.
Word of mouth has been the biggest tool for growing our business over the past year.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Taking a step back to reflect on my accomplishments and failures. Always thinking about how I can do better as a businesswoman, a wife, and a mother. As long as what I’m doing teaches me new things, keeps me connected to others, makes me feel inspired, and gives back to the community, I consider it successful.
