Meet Erin Thiem of Back Home Bakery in Weatherford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Thiem.

In 2009, Back Home Bakery opened behind the house of the original owner, Jeri Lionberger. From its inception, the bakery has been cherished for its classic American baked goods, vintage decor and warm, inviting atmosphere.

In 2015, the bakery’s original owner passed her oven mitts to two sisters, Jamie Mittendorf and Erin, along with a close friend, Amy Kramer. The new owners have thoughtfully expanded the bakery while maintaining small town hospitality and top-notch bakery goods. In July of this year, more space was needed and the location was moved to the current spot in historic downtown Weatherford. This building was originally constructed in the 1890s and we helped restore it to its original glory.

They continue to bake with love and their customers and staff are an extension of their own family. When you visit them, you will truly feel like you went “Back Home”! Their bakery serves breakfast, lunch, baked sweet treats, wedding cakes and specialty cakes for all occasions.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Moving a bakery is HARD!

We doubled our sales from 2015 to 2016 and we knew that more space was a necessity to continue to serve our loyal fans. So we stumbled upon a building that was one step shy of falling down. It literally was near condemnation. But we didn’t see the holes in the ceiling or the fact there was no floor. We saw the potential for a vintage space that would allow you to take a step back in time when getting a cookie with your child was an event or ordering your wedding cake was a personal experience.

The owner of the building is committed to restoring Weatherford and supporting local businesses, and our partnership with the Landlord has been tight-knit. We were close partners during the restoration process to ensure the building was full of old warm charm that fit the historic location.

We were wearing SO many hats during the restoration process! From bakers to building designers to commercial equipment specialists. We literally drug our small children through countless hours of searching for perfect vintage windows, custom light fixtures, paint colors, salvaged letters for a unique “Bakery” sign and many other off the wall things that required visiting antique malls!

After 6 months of renovating, we were able to move our business over the July 4th weekend. We were determined to get moved into our space prior to the Parker County Peach Festival, and we did! Barely! We received our Certificate of Occupancy and Food Permit only 2 days before the annual festival where we helped welcome over 30,000 visitors to our historic downtown. We baked our fingers off getting ready, but the day was a huge success!

At Back Home Bakery our core focus is to fill your belly and warm your heart. Truly, we want you to visit us and feel like you are going “Back Home” to enjoy the love and comfort of delicious baked goods.

We are a full service bakery that offers a wide variety of dessert options, but our specialty is creating custom cakes for all events. We also offer a breakfast and lunch menu to satisfy your savory tooth while you’re here.

In addition to being known for our high quality product and top-notch customer service, we also offer a private event room for baby and bridal showers, office meetings and seminars, and holiday or special events. Several times a month we provide cookie, cake, and cupcake decorating classes that are so much fun for all ages! We value memorable experiences, and we love to see friends and families come together and enjoy quality time shared over beautiful and delicious food!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We define success as 100% customer satisfaction. We believe in our product and our service so strongly, that we guarantee customer satisfaction. 95% of our business is either repeat customers or referrals, and the loyalty and love our customers show us really is overwhelming!
