Conversations with Cyn Alexander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyn Alexander.

Hi Cyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved to read. My love for reading grew as I went through high school where I discovered urban fiction. When it was time to go to college, I had many different majors before settling on creative writing. I now have my bachelor’s degree and am working on my MA in creative writing with a focus in fiction. Aside from that, I am an author of 14 books of my own and I have my own company, Cynful Monarch, offering services for authors such as editing and typesetting.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not. I have had to learn along the way and there were many bumps along the road and many times I have wanted to give up. Gaining a solid readers base has been my biggest struggle and after three years I’m still not where I want to be, but I have learned to be resilient. Continuing on regardless of sales, charts, and reviews. Writing is my passion, and those things shouldn’t stop me from doing what I love. I am happy that the feedback and numbers surrounding my books has been positive for the most part and the numbers are slowly rising with every release!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
First and foremost, I am an author. My greatest joy is creating characters my readers fall in love with. It is my specialty to create characters that are realistic and relatable. I am also known for leaving killing cliffhangers on books when I write series. I love a good cliffhanger myself, so it came naturally to me when I started writing.

Urban fiction is my first true love when it comes to books, and that is the genre I have launched my career in, but eventually, I do want to branch out and try other genres out so I can be more versatile. However, I am most proud of the books I have already created and the fact that all of my books are 4-star reads and above. The love for my books truly keeps me going and makes me so proud.

I believe the way I study my craft is what sets me apart from other authors. I take the time to break creative writing down. I dissect it, I learn from others, I open myself up to be inspired by everything around me. I create fiction that feels real which allows my readers to completely immerse themselves in my work.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I used to be an audiobook narrator while I was going to school for my BA. During that time, I was able to meet some great authors while narrating their books. One author was Kenya Redd. She and I became friends and she taught me a lot about the industry. It was because of her I decided I could be an author and she helped me along the way with my first book.

I also have many role models I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting. Ashley Antoinette being one, as well as Noire, Keisha Ervin, Deja King, and Angie Thomas.
