Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Del Carmen Guzman.
Hi Maria Del Carmen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Jalisco, Mexico but was raised in California and later moved to Texas. Being the oldest sibling out of five made me grow up faster. My biggest responsibility was the one I enjoyed the most, cooking for my younger siblings. My siblings always enjoyed my amateur cakes I would make for their birthdays. I didn’t put as much attention to the pastry area as I was more focused on the food department. This led me to pursue a Culinary Arts Degree from the Art Institute of Dallas which I earned with Honors. While working in the restaurant industry I still baked cakes as a hobby for my friends and family. That was when my husband made me realize my hobby could become a bakery business since there was high demand.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a crazy road! Carmel Cakery wasn’t my first Bakery concept. The first one was closed by our partners which was a mutual decision. This made me more determined to try again and start another bakery and make it grow. How do you do that in the middle of the pandemic? I took a chance, I told myself if Carmel Cakery was my calling, then I’ll let Faith guide me and keep me sane. It’s in my nature to self-motivate and work for what I want.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Carmel Cakery creates handmade artisan cakes, decorated sugar cookies and pastries specially made for our customers. We use only high-quality ingredients to create products that are both lively and flavorful. Our designs are a great way to celebrate special occasions, send a message to a special someone, or indulge yourself in a deliciously fun experience. Making high detailed sculpted cakes is a popular request from sculpting 3D designer shoes to cars and even familiar characters. Having a sharp eye for the smallest details is very intriguing to achieve.
What matters most to you?
Having our baked goods be as tasty as they look is key. Being able to make our items from scratch is what helps us produce high-quality goods. Being able to see our customers’ face light up with excitement after receiving their cake or cookies is what we look forward to the most.
