Conversations with Justin Simmons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Simmons.

Hi Justin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In the 90’s I was always influenced by the graffiti writing Hip Hop era. Spray painting on outside walls buildings and making quick sketches on school paper in the classrooms. But the reruns of the 70s sitcom show called Goodtimes would appear on the Television, it would really challenged me to start painting on canvases. Erine Barnes was the main paint artist on that show. And I wanted to paint like Erine Barnes. Art has always has been an easy emotion for me to express what I am feeling and I still love creating Art ’till this day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not easy, it’s been extremely challenging for me because for a couple of reasons. 1# I am not part of an elite art group that can help and keep you connected with upcoming event gigs, juried show openings, art Museum featuring spot for you to display your work, and collaboration with colleges to set up art workshops. #2: Sometimes I feel like it’s all about having the right skin complexion for the connection issue. Especially living here in the south. Not too many people care or value black art in the South. #3: Covid pandemic is making it very difficult to network and to promote your work.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Paint artist/illustrator. I am a master painter; most art commission comes from painting portraits and collages. The vibrant colors and the realism of my work sets me apart from everyone else.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Providing for my family makes me happy and being an inspiration and great example for my culture and in my community.
