Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Stylz.
Hi Amber, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
It all started at age 11 in the kitchen with my mom on Sundays. Yes, I’ve had my horror stories of the hot comb and grease popping like many others and just decided to be a girl that went for it. From childhood, I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist, my grandmother, God rest Her soul, had a Master’s in Cosmetology and her own Salon in Miami, Fl. until 1985 when I was born and she moved to Dallas. My 2 favorite Aunts also did our hair coming up so it was always around me, I watched, learned, and began styling myself, my friends at church, kids at school, and even my mom. Once I graduated High School, I went into Corporate America not wanting to leave my mom after the passing of my Father. And even though it was a great career it was not fulfilling and always gave me a reason to want more. So, 2014 I enrolled in Cosmetology School, and in 2015 I graduated Ogle School of Hair and Nails Dallas. It was to date, the proudest moment of my life. I finally had purpose. I’d work my day job and head straight to the Salon in the evening. I was given my first chair at the Rikki Burke Salon Dallas. Rikki taught me the game. I am forever grateful for this woman and everything that she has instilled in me. She is an experience and a great mentor. From 2015 to 2019 I built my brand and was able to expand into my very first hair studio salon suite, Stylz & Co. where I am now a full-time healthy hairstylist after transitioning from Corporate March 2021.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the transition from Corporate America into Entrepreneurship has probably been the biggest challenge I’ve faced in a long time. It’s a journey I don’t hear many being very vocal about and I think we have an entire community of people that may need to hear more of not so much the struggle but the transparency of it all. I’m going to be more vocal moving forward throughout my own journey. It’s fun, it’s new, it’s scary, it’s empowering, it’s liberating, it’s even exhausting and lonely at times, like all of that but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made in my entire life.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Most people think Stylz is my last name, well it’s not LOL! Amber Stylz is my alter ego, my brand, and the business. She’s who I created to be outside of my 9-5 lifestyle at the time. She’s all things heathy inside and out. We focus on healthy hair care and building confidence within. Currently, I am a Health Coach, Master Wig Artist, and my client favorites are my signature silk press, sew-in installs, Barbie looks, and custom closure wig creations. I’ve studied with celebrity stylist Jaylon Aaron, Alonzo Arnold, Moni Bee, and a number of Dallas Finest I travel and also book events. I’ve appeared on Good Morning Texas and a number of Runways. I cater to all women. My salon is a whole vibe. Very much relaxing, peaceful, inviting and my services give experience. I have healthy hair relationships with my clients. We both understand they’re on the journey for themselves but not by themselves. That and the fact that I’ll grow it and sew it is what I feel my clients appreciate most. Although, if you ask them directly, they may say the shampoo, LOL. Most of my clients are recurring which I love however I am always accepting new clients that are passionate about their hair.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
What most people don’t know is I’m extremely shy. They only see Amber Stylz, she’s always turnt up, so when I’m home being Amber Nicole, I’m a big nerd. I’m always reading or researching something. I love watching comedies, decorating, having concerts in the shower, and cooking but very much introverted and I love sleep.
