Meet Cemetria Hayes McMullen of Sage Massage Studio in Oak Lawn and Turtle Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cemetria Hayes McMullen.

Cemetria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in college pursuing a degree in art education, I took a class called Stress Reduction Through Movement. This class introduced me to the world of relaxation and modalities like massage therapy that piqued my creative side.

Soon after, I attended massage school and fast forward from 2000 to present, I am proud to say that massage is my art!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There was a mix of smooth roads, rocky roads and even cliffs!

I learned, early on in my career, that I am responsible for the choices I make and that there is a level of empowerment when I take educated chances, fall on my face, look up at the horizon and get up again.

Please tell us about Sage Massage Studio.
Sage Massage Studio grew out of a lost dream.

During the recession, I owned a commercial property on a historic town square. I had plans, visions, approvals from the city council to get Sage Guesthouse and Spa soaring to new heights.

When that whole plan financially fell through, I re-calibrated, and dreamed a new dream. Working for local spas allowed me the time and stability to make decisions about who I was as a massage therapist and what I wanted to achieve in both my personal and professional life. It also allowed me the freedom to take my time and create services the way I wanted my clients to experience massage.

Although I have been practicing massage since 2000, new avenues like teaching massage, hydrotherapy and business ethics, allow me to stay relevant to the industries continuous growth.

Recently, Sage Massage Studio was acknowledged an award as Best Massage in Dallas!
What a boost to my professional ego!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories is making mud cookies on a really hot Texas day.

Getting the dirt, mixing it with water. And laying it out to dry on the hot pavement, was just the best!
