Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Edwards.
Carl, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my first business mowing yards in my neighborhood when I was 12 pushing the lawn mower up and down the street and knocking on doors. I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, even before I knew what an entrepreneur was.
I started in the hearing aid industry when I was 20. I saw something missing in the industry. It wasn’t always easy for seniors to get in and out of the office all the time. So, I had the idea to give seniors easier access to the services they need. I had the idea, but it took a lot of trial and error and it was a long process to make it work. I still have a couple things in development to make it even more efficient, but we have made hearing aids easier to access. During the process we found that we were getting even better results for patients by fitting hearing aids in their home where they listen the most.
I met my wife Kristen 4 years ago and something she said to me when we first started dating has never motivate me more. She said “You’re a natural leader”. I don’t even think she remembers saying it to me, but its words I’ll never forget. Before she said that to me, being a leader had never even crossed my mind. Since then, we got married, I launched Bionix Hearing, and started a leadership program for seniors.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think any successful business owner would tell you it’s tough. Until you start your own business, it’s impossible to comprehend how much work really goes on that people on the outside never know about. It’s not always been a smooth road. Anyone can start a business and replicate what everyone else is doing. It’s extremely difficult when you start a business that is a new concept all together.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bionix Hearing – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Bionix Hearing started when my grandmother needed help with her hearing aids. Several years ago I fit my grandmother with her first set of hearing aids. As time went on, her health had declined and she was not as mobile as she was before. It was very difficult for her to come into the office. She didn’t drive and was dependent on someone to take her. It wasn’t possible for me to pack up my entire clinic and go to her. The equipment was big and bulky and it was not easily portable. At least not in a way that it was practical for me to bring everything I would need. So I asked myself…. Why couldn’t I take my equipment to her? So, that’s what I did. I invented a clinic in a box where I could do anything that could be done in an office, in the home of the patient. Even down to the sound booth. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away before I was able to complete what I call my “Box”.
We quickly realized that not only were we able to help people with mobility issues, but our patients are getting better results faster. Fitting hearing aids in their home, we get more accurate settings with fewer follow up visits which can be really inconvenient. When a patient is fit in an office, the office doesn’t sound like their day to day surroundings. By doing this in their home we can account for these issues from day 1.
We made it possible to help people in a way that wasn’t possible before. We are the first company able to provide a full clinic in the comfort of their own home.
Our number one priority is putting the patient first and providing the care and service that each patient deserves. We are accredited by the BBB and all of our hearing professionals undergo background checks before coming to your home.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love DFW. I’m originally from Wichita Falls, so it’s not too far away from my family. I love the people of DFW. Even though there is a friendly rivalry between Dallas and Fort Worth, the people of DFW are friendly and always willing to offer a helping hand whether you know them or not. I also like how DFW always has something new to offer (restaurants, shops, entertainment, etc).
My least favorite thing about DFW is I35. Offering in home care for our patients, I try to avoid I35 if at all possible.
