Meet LeTisha Nyembo

Today we’d like to introduce you to LeTisha Nyembo.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have over a decade of experience in production. Since graduating in 2011 with a broadcast journalism degree, I began my journey discovering my passion. I have found that producing and directing really excite me. I love networking and building teams of people to come together on a project.

In 2018, several months into post-partum, I was ready to get back into the swing of production. Only issue was there was no script. My videographer and I took a couple of swings at writing and found it to be a challenge. However, an author reached out and wanted to try her hand at screenplay writing. Within months, Cicley Rue was able to write 16 episodes. And voila, Kismet the series was born.

We spent 2 months in pre-production and it took 2 months to shoot the mini-episodes. Once we wrapped production, I began editing. It has taken 2 years to release. Being a perfectionist, I have at least 2 to 3 versions of each episodes.

Since the release of Kismet, I am back at square one. However, this time, instead of collaborating with 1 screenwriter, I have created a screenwriter’s room. Together, we will write 4 short horror films all set in the triple D, that’s Dallas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Aside from being a freelance video editor, I am a mother of three young boys, all under the age of 5. I homeschooled my oldest for 2 years before sending him to kindergarten. The biggest struggle I am confronted with is motherhood is a 24 hour. 7 days a week job.

Although motherhood can be a tough job, I am proud to have such a strong presence in my children’s life. I am also glad that they are able to see me working. They are always interested. They love when I capture them on video or edit footage.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Being a director/editor is much more than being on set. From the initial consultation, I eagerly get all the information about the project or brand I am working for. I love getting to know the back story. This allows me to form my own relationship with the brand/story. This way, I can pull from my personal experience when creating concepts.

Details are super important when interpreting someone’s story. Breaking down the vision into a concrete plan excites me! This gets me amped for production day. Once the call sheets, production presentations, and shot list has been distributed to the crew, we are ready to head into production.

Recently, I was asked what do I enjoy the most about working in this industry. I have to say that a happy client that enjoys the final result and the experience of working with me is the highlight of it all.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me means working with the likes of Issa Rae or Tyler Perry and still having time to raise my family. This new generation of women are working women with entire families supporting them. I am proud to be one of them. Having a balanced work and home life is the ultimate goal.
