Meet Samara Chalott Barron and Christian Ríos Portilla of Nino’s Tacos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samara Chalott Barron and Christian Ríos Portilla.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The idea of becoming small business owners was inspired by the countless gatherings my husband and I hosted at our home pre-pandemic. After many of our friends and family members encouraged us to start catering family parties, my husband decided to make it official by applying for an LLC. By May we were up and running! We booked our first event—a little boy’s birthday party. Thankfully, our business has kept us busy almost every weekend since!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Becoming small business owners in the food industry has definitely put us on a learning curve—and there is still so much more to learn! Since both of us continue working our full-time jobs–Christian in commercial roofing and me as an elementary school teacher, making the most of our free time to prep and perfect our recipes has been our top priority. We have learned the hard way to become more efficient with our time when we prepare as we want to make sure all our ingredients are as fresh as possible for our clients. Nonetheless, the hardest obstacle we’ve faced has been sacrificing time away from our friends and families, we hope that as our business grows, we will be able to find a better balance.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a family and Latinx-owned business bringing homecooked taquizas to celebrate the biggest moments, whether it be a birthday, a wedding, or just a good kick-back. We specialize in serving street-style tacos with recipes influenced by our Mexican roots. When we cater an event, our hope is that our clients see and feel the love we pour into our recipes for everything we cook; frijoles charros, tacos de pastor and bistec, quesadillas, rice, and our freshly-made aguas frescas. We strive for our clients to feel that we know just how special their events are, and hope that they feel satisfied knowing that our setup will be up to their standards and even Instagram-worthy! We guarantee to our clients that their guests will be impressed!

In the meantime, we are only able to cater events, but you may find us all around DFW at a pop-up or a market. We hope to expand our business into a food truck in the near future. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to find out where our next pop-up will be and to find out more information about our catering packages.
