Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorian Clark.
Dorian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was struggling with health issues, baking was my way of escaping reality and maintaining my sanity. It was suggested that I open a home bakery. After considering it for a couple of days, I talked it over with my sister, then decided to open one. Choosing a name for my business was the next step. I wanted a name that reflected my passion for baking, as well as my family. I grew up with my grandmother in the kitchen, watching her cook was the start of my passion. Her name is Dora, Amora means “love” in various languages. Dora’s (Love) Amora opened for business in January 2017.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t been easy. However, I am glad that it hasn’t been. With all the challenges I’ve faced, I’ve learned so much about myself. Due to health issues when I first started baking, my business was sporadic. As my health improved, I thought I could fully focus on Dora’s Amora without any interruptions (laughing) life doesn’t work this way. I’m a big believer in myself, and if I can’t believe in myself, who can? As a result of the shutdown, sales slowed until I realized that the success of my company depends entirely on me. I had to let go of my preferences and adapt to the current economic climate. This change led to constant growth of my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Dora’s Amora creates individualized cakes, cupcakes, and other confections. As a self-taught cake designer, I can create beautiful, delicious cakes for my customers. I have a knack for visualizing things and making it a reality. My competitive advantage is that I prefer to keep prices reasonable. If a customer is interested in anything, I offer alternatives that are within their budget. Everyone, in my opinion, should have a customized cake. It makes you feel special.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Always remain consistent; if your consumers do not want to go out, go to them; monitor local competitors’ prices; provide offers; vary the way you market, and always be polite. Word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool.
