Conversations with Phélan Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phélan Johnson.

Hi Phélan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I started signing before I could talk. My parents encouraged me to sing, and there are so many home videos of me singing along to the greats like Michael Jackson and Prince. I remember writing songs even in kindergarten. Not on paper, but just in my mind coming up with melodies and lyrics and singing them around the house. I grew up singing in gospel choir and would frequently lead the group with solos. I began recording in the studio by the time I was 11, and at 12 I had signed a management contract with Bobbi Humphry who was Tevin Campbell’s original manager. Although this relationship never led me to be discovered, I continue writing and recording throughout high school – performing at malls, festivals, and anywhere I could show my talent. After graduating high school, I helped create the Dallas-based R and B group Confidential. We made local waves in deep ellum, performed at K104’s Texas Idol competition, and eventually got signed with Don Vito’s production company (Produced for Cherish, Kandi, and others). We auditioned for Usher and his mother, Capital records, and Warner Bros. Records. As close as we were, ultimately the group broke up and I spent many years writing for other artist. I joined writing team ‘The Tranzformerz’ and we signed to Rick Ross imprint ‘Maybach Music’. We wrote for artists such as Rick Ross, Trina, The triple C’s, and others. I linked up later with star producer S1 [Produced Kanye’s Power]. He gave me an opportunity to have my songs exposed to Jay-Z himself. After a some soul searching and getting back to the little kid with a big dream, I decided to push on as a solo artist. I still write, produce, and vocally arrange for other artist, but my dream of people hearing my voice and my words is my top priority.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely been many struggles. I have been within an inch of stardom a few times and I’ve experienced a lot of letdowns and disappointments. I remember when I signed with Rick Ross, I knew the world was to be mine. I had so many good songs written for Beyonce, Rihanna, and others, I knew I was going to be the next Dream or Ester Dean. It’s hard when you are on the cusp and you sign a deal and go from thinking it’s all around the corner and then later coming to realization that it’s all actually behind you. I think it’s risky to sign with artist-created labels because many of times you are doing what benefits the artist and the image of the artist, rather than them truly being invested in you and your talent.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a vocalist, songwriter, producer, and all-around creative. I grew up listening to all of the greats from Sam Cooke to Bobby Brown, Beyonce, to Whitney, Missy Elliot to Ginuwine. Outside of being dedicated to vocal excellence and crafty lyrics, I was blessed with an ear for music. I often hear the notes, chords, and harmonies, many don’t hear. Once a song hits me, the details of the harmonies, key changes, and ad-libs from a blueprint in my head. I hear the song before it’s done. People who often work with me remark at my vocal arrangements. When I start layering vocals they’ll be like “I don’t know Phélan, this sounds weird or off” and I’m like “Trust me!” Sure, enough once I build out arrangement it all makes sense. My desire is for people to go back to experiencing that wonder in music – through melody, passion, emotion, and a lot of main elements we had in the ’90s that are largely washed out in today’s music. I’ve been working on an album for the last two years and it’s titled “The Last Supafriend” as a nod to Missy, Timbaland, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and everyone who had that musical style. I can’t wait for people to hear that feel-good music from me and it should be dropping spring of 2022. My single “Hear your Name” is coming out soon!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always a dreamer and a romantic since I could remember. I was driven, and into my art. Most kids just wanted to play PlayStation or go outside, and I was in the house writing songs about love and producing on my Yamaha keyboard. I was admittedly shy, and many times I literally had to be forced to sing in front of others. I loved listening to music and emulating the vocals styles of others to perfect my craft. But outside of being focused on music, I’ve always loved the outdoors, biking, hiking, and being in nature. It grounds me and renews my spirit. I hope one day to own a cabin in the mountains and live a simple life with a couple dogs and a farm.
