Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Atkinson.
Hi Maria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started Lady M’s Cupcakery about 10 years ago out of my home. I am self-taught, left my job at American Airlines Cargo to follow my dream of being a business owner and grow into other endeavors within the cake world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t easy. Growing my clientele was hard. I remember my first Christmas as a business owner my sister and I baked over 30 dozen treats to offer dessert platters with a variety of cookies. My sister and I sat outside my house with a little table and my trays on display. After 3 days and 39• degree weather, I had NO SALES! It was so disheartening. Fast forward to today I have a waiting list for the holiday specials I offer. So, things did turn around. That moment in my start of this always humbles me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Specialty cakes from Weddings to Quinceñeras as well as custom party cakes. I also offer custom-decorated cookies as well as dipped treats. In 2022 I will be expanding my menu to other specialty treats and daily dessert options.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I have worked with some amazing vendors. Antojitos Sam from Grand Prairie, Pipos Parties & More from Arlington Texas, and Klassy Kreations DFW are 3 of my favorites to collab with they offer some awesome party setups. When other party planners want to work with me, I love the opportunity and helping bring their visions and their client’s visions to life thru cake. It’s always great to see the final setups.
