Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomyia Wright.
Thomyia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always had a passion for photography for as long as I remember. Taking pictures of my friends, family vacations, the fall leaf laying in the middle of the street, anything and everything using whichever camera I could get my hands on.
It wasn’t until my 7th grade year of middle school when I was formally introduced to photography by taking it as an elective and learning the technicalities. I was enrolled in the class for a couple years, but still never lost my love for the art; it was an outlet of mine.
Fast-forward to sometime during my college career, I saved enough to buy my first DSLR. At this point, my portfolio was compiled of self-portraits, landscaping, and sunsets. I wanted to dive into portraits, but didn’t know where or how to start – I was nervous, too.
Eventually, I put my nerves aside and began investing in myself and my equipment. I bought a beginner’s lighting/backdrop kit and speed-light, started posting some of my self-portraits on social media, which led me to my first booking around the beginning of the fall season. After that session, inquiries for holiday pictures started rolling in and that was an influx of clients for those and other categories such as birthdays and maternity photos. At this time, I had made some monumental steps in my craft and now, business.
Almost a year later, and my confidence in both myself and my work has completely skyrocketed, which has resulted in the growth of my business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ultimately, yes, but on a micro-scale, no. I am my biggest critic and at times I’ll get discouraged when my photos won’t come out as expected, or my bookings would slow down to maybe one-two clients a month, but I use that time to reflect and learn. I believe that every course has a couple bumps in the road, but it’s the overall perspective and goal that keeps the road smooth.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer who specializes in portraits, maternity, and lifestyle photography. I’m known for my patience, artistry, dedication to my work, and my ability to be authentic, professional, and fun! I’m most proud of my ability to adapt, learn, and ever-growing confidence. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not ashamed of my progress; I’m not ashamed of starting from the bottom to perfect my craft and I showcase that on my social media platforms.
What matters most to you? Why?
Being happy and at peace with myself. If I can balance that, I can balance any and everything.
