Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Johnson.
Hi Debra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Debra Johnson and I was born and raised in Dallas, TX. I was raised by my grandmother who showed me how to be the woman I am today. I am currently a Teacher and Coach for a High School–AVID Coordinator at my campus, an active monitor of the Black Student Union we have, and I am the Assistant Head Track Coach. I have fallen in love with teaching kids and I truly feel that I make an impact on kids by teaching them the curriculum, life skills, and how to advocate for themselves. My other full-time career is as a Real Estate Agent serving the DFW. My life story is a long one, I detail it out in my book titled ‘The Hand You Were Dealt’ which was published in 2019.
I have faced many hardships in this life but God kept me through it all! I would not be where I am without Him. I am also thankful for my loving village; Lauren Hall, Jeff Petersmeyer, Joey Foster, Mrs. Foster, Kimetria Sneed, Ashtaan Horton, Maria Lara, and Yvonne Newborn. They all stepped into my life and loved me as if I was their own without hesitation!
I am a proud graduate of Cedar Hill High School class of 2011. From there, I went to Boise State University and the University of Texas at Arlington on a track and field scholarship where I graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice. I worked in the juvenile detention facility for a year before moving into teaching and coaching. I am currently in Year 6 of Teaching/Coaching which I am over the moon passionate about! I have high hopes of moving up the ladder in the education field.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was raised without a mother or a father, I love them both abundantly despite of the absence. Rest in peace to my father who passed away in 2012. My grandmother is who I have always known and she is my rock. I would not be the woman I am today without her. This alone can take a high toll on which way you go in life. I am also a victim of sexual assault. This was a huge obstacle for me to hurdle over but with God and therapy, anything is possible! Thankfully I was guided down the right path by my village and loved ones.
I have learned that bad things do happen to good people but there is a bigger reason for it. God gives healing, restoration, and peace even in the midst of tribulations. I also have learned that it is ok to go to therapy even though it is downplayed and looked down upon in the black community. It is important to talk to someone to help you on your healing journey. A healthy village of people who love and want your best interest is the biggest life lesson I have learned so far and I pass that knowledge to any and everyone that I can.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I want my readers to know that it is a blessing to have multiple careers and be active in the community.
