Conversations with Jennifer Stockett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Stockett.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have a heart for small businesses. My parents and grandparents owned their own businesses, so I guess it is in my blood. After graduating college, I worked as a marketing coordinator for an independent pharmacy for almost 5 years. Growing up, I knew that small business owners often juggle many jobs – ranging from payroll to custodian, when needed. My work in the pharmacy helped me realize firsthand how many small businesses need help with their marketing. Most small businesses try to handle marketing in-house because an agency or full-time marketing coordinator may not be within their budget but the need still exists. I am able to bring my creative thinking to small businesses, organizations, and entrepreneurs alike to help them stay relevant in the ever-changing world of marketing.

My husband’s job moved us from Oklahoma to the DFW area and I found myself looking for a flexible working situation for me and our growing family. With a passion for small business and an expertise in marketing and graphic design, I knew I could find businesses in the area to work with. Over the last 4 years, I have had the privilege of working with several businesses in the Ellis County area and remotely throughout Oklahoma and Texas.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Making the jump to working for myself might have been the scariest thing I’ve done so far. The obvious financial risk was scary enough but also thinking – what if I don’t succeed. Leaving the safety net of an 8-5 job to find my own clients and book my own projects was incredibly intimidating and honestly, still is at times. I am not sure that will ever get easier, but it is also very rewarding to find small businesses to work with and watch them grow and succeed.

Because I work with small businesses, 2020 was an incredibly hard year. Clients were uncertain of their futures, making swift changes to how they did business and an online presence was more important than ever. I hated the uncertainty but loved getting to problem solve with clients on how to transition their business during lockdowns and distancing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work with small businesses with graphic design (primarily branding and marketing materials), website design, and social media marketing.

I’m proud of all of my projects! I just recently finished a brand for an indoor playground in Oklahoma called Laynie’s TreeHouse. I loved their vision for the space and it was fun to create. Another local project that I’m proud of is Tiverton Bakeshop in Ovilla, it’s probably my most delicious project to date. They are a family-owned business with the cutest little shop. I loved their inspiration for their brand and how they have brought it to life.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Midlothian is growing like crazy. For someone who works with growing small businesses – what better place to be!
