Life & Work with Kj Dunn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kj Dunn.

Hi Kj, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started writing in Elementary. Books and literature were how I was able to escape some of my truths. I didn’t know what all would happen by releasing my first book “My Mother’s Daughter” in 2020. I was so unprepared but I was also eager for the world to see books in a different light. I didn’t want my book to be the typical read. However, I did want it to take the reader for a ride and I think it was executed beautifully! My Mother’s Daughter takes you into the mind of the daughter and allows you to see the intricate details of her heart. You get to take a front-row seat to this family’s journey to forgiveness. It does pull on your emotions a little bit but if it makes you want to call your mom or drop a grudge then I’ve done my job. This year, my life took a slight turn and it birthed another book. This one, however, will more so give a little hope and a smile to “the sick and shut-in.” Being ill, falling ill, however you want to word it, should not consume who you are. Sometimes we just need a reminder to Choose Happiness.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been rocky. Being a bestselling author on Amazon for 3 days, to barely generating sales, to hosting my first bookfair after falling ill, to trying really hard to get motivated. It really has been a wild ride but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Life and the uncertainties are what makes great stories. Especially when you are able to persevere and overcome. It’s making me stronger and more of a warrior than I’ve ever thought possible.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a writer, a poet, a mentor, a podcast host but most importantly I’m a person. I’m mostly known for my poems and my play on words. I’m proud of the fact that I keep getting up even though life is working tirelessly to take me out. I keep coming back harder than before. I have a new podcast on podbean and Anchor called Hey Sick Girl, still doing He said vs she said, I am still promoting My Mother’s Daughter and I will be attending a kid’s brunch and book signing in Virginia next year, and releasing my new book next year. What sets me apart is my perception. Where others see failure, I see a learning experience. Where most would give up and do something different, I’m back in my office and trying to find new creative ways to be heard.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be winning a poetry contest in the 5th grade and having my poem published in the elementary English books. It showed me how my little words can be big and somebody somewhere was listening to what I had to say. It felt amazing!
