Life & Work with Holly Roberts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Roberts.

Hi Holly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Photography in my heart never had a “start” date, it was just always something I loved. Not only did my dad gift me his eyes, but he gave me the passion and love for photography and even gifted me my first digital camera as a young pre-teen. I took photographs of everything, flowers, trees, sunsets, family, friends, horrible embarrassing selfies in the mirror (HA!) My love for it grew with age and in high school, I made short film in film class while also taking documentary-style photos for the school yearbook. It was always a huge dream of mine to be a NatGeo Photographer, and I threw that dream away for a 9-5 career in healthcare that left me feeling incomplete. I began taking my hobby more seriously in 2019 before the pandemic hit and finally decided to take a leap and quit my stable job to launch my full-time wedding photography business. And here I am still today, not a NatGeo Photographer, but still visiting insane places around the world guiding and documenting couples on their intimate weddings and epic elopements!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing worth having ever has an easy and smooth road. Things definitely got more rocky when weddings were being postponed left and right in 2020. But it allowed me to branch out to other forms of art, and recenter niche my business. I learned in that time I wanted to solely work with couples looking to have their wedding day their way, intimately and on their terms.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in documenting intimate weddings and elopements for couples in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and quite frankly the whole world. The sky is the limit for someone’s wedding day and as a lover of the outdoors, and a lover for travel, I thrive in helping couples figure out the logistics so they can have their more unique experiences on their wedding day. I lead them to strip away all the expectations others may have for them and their partners and just be a little selfish, amplify and encourage them to have their own voice and spend their wedding day exactly how they want to. Whether that is a small ceremony on a beach, something just you and your future spouse on a mountain, or even just a fun day adventuring through a new city, the limit does not exist. And I help them figure that all out while documenting every precious moment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Just like anything in life there are good moments and not-so-good moments, but it’s best to learn from those “unlucky” moments and turn it more into a lesson rather than a curse. I recently decided standing on a foldable chair at a wedding reception to ~get the shot~ was a good idea until gravity did its thing and I fell and broke my flash, that was unlucky. But I definitely learned something and the wedding was still captured perfectly thanks to backups, but ouch! I would consider myself very lucky with the clients that have come my way. I truly have the most amazing clients who put their full trust in my art and show me so much support, and I am truly blessed for that.
