Today we’d like to introduce you to James Burnett.
Hi James, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I began writing music at 15 and performing in Dallas in several bands until 2016 when I moved to LA for a couple of years. It was in LA that I donned the moniker God Of Love, towards the end of my stay. I moved back to Dallas at 24 and began performing under the new name as a solo artist, releasing my first full-length album, Casino Dream, in 2019, produced by Will Hooper. That same year I began working on the follow-up, Do Your Worst, with Alex Bhore in Oak Cliff. After a couple of wild years, the album was finally released earlier this month through Red Zeppelin Records.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Delays were caused by the pandemic, there were times we weren’t sure if we’d ever release the album or if anyone would want to listen to it in the new reality which was quickly forming, or if anyone would want to come to shows or anything like that. In the midst of all that worry, Alex received the job of a lifetime, getting to help create the music for Halo Infinite’s multiplayer. That was one of the moments we knew we’d be able to finish the album because it literally helped keep the studio open. Soon after we had the album mastered in early 2021, I was invited to join the Red Zeppelin lineup, which was another big break.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a songwriter and performer with a dark sound and a live show that is out of this world. I make big music with delightfully cynical undertones.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Making great music, because that’s what drives me and I think art is one of the cornerstones of society. So, it’s something I can do for the betterment of the human condition.
