Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Westbrook.
Hi Erica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I got my license in 2009 and started my career at Toni and Guy specializing in haircuts. I worked for Toni and Guy for about two years. I desired to learn the chemical side of my career, so I left to learn organically at other salons. I had a big move to Arizona in 2011, worked there for a year, then took a brief break from salon life to raise my kids. Our family moved back to DFW in 2014 where I began working at Salons at Bella Suites Salon in Garland, TX, where I still work today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If I told you it was a smooth road, I’d be lying. I had to learn how to run a business after working for several other salons. I have a great community of women that I learn from, ask questions, and I will be committed to learning the rest of my career. There’s a business side and technical side to my career that requires that commitment to learning.
When Covid hit we experienced the shutdown from March-May of 2020, that changed everything for so many. Some lost their entire careers and shut the door of their business. We all began to work in masks, gloves with every client regardless of service, and making sure we continue sanitization while adding in a few more steps. Going back to work was challenging – the product shelves at our supply stores were bare & we all saw increases in the cost of our products. The sanitizing agents were limited so you have this high demand, low supply, and we know what happens, inflation. What a year it has been, I continue to try and just navigate it all as best I can. I’m so thankful my business is still going strong!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I personally don’t choose to specialize in any one thing, I love to offer versatility and have my doors open to all ages, all trends, all styles, and all people.
Specializing makes sense for some and maybe I’ll choose that one day for my business. For now, I like being able to offer a range of services.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I have a collaboration in the works. I’ll have to complete it with a short timeline so I have been waiting to ensure I have time to dedicate myself to the completion of project. I had a few videos go viral on my salon Tik Tok page. I continue to try and get education out there for others. Follow me on Instagram and Tik Tok.
