Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Isom.
Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Hi you all! I’m Amy Akabue-Isom! First I want to say just how much of an honor it is to share just a part of my story with you all. Thank you for taking the time to read it!
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, but lived in Lubbock, Texas for 9 years. I kind of consider both cities home!
My parents are both from Nigeria (I am Igbo), they moved to the states in the late 70s and early 80s for educational opportunities; I am so proud of them both! I am the baby of 6 and enjoy having a huge family; it was never a dull moment growing up!
Jesus is and has my whole heart and my faith in Him secures me. At the age of 12, He began to draw me to Himself and I have not looked back since. I was baptized into Christ at 19 years old and have desired to share the love of Christ wherever I go! All that I have and all that I am is because of Him! In all of my imperfection, His perfect love keeps me.
I’m a mama bear to the sweetest and most energetic 3 year old son; I am also a wife of 7 years.
I graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree concentration in psychology, social work, and communication studies, I also hold a second degree in biblical studies from SIBI.
I have the most sweetest and rawest friends and mentor-figures; God truly answers prayers! I have a heart for women, children, families, and advocacy, especially for foster care youth. Life has taught me how to share my voice and be a voice to the voiceless. As the baby sister to a beauty who is autistic and brain damaged, being a voice is so important to me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been smooth and steady! At this time I can only take 1 to 2 clients a week based on the size of project & preparation time needed. It is important to me to maintain margin for the other things on my plate, such as family, friendship, ministry, other projects and rest.
My biggest stretching is in the area of social media; It was my greatest struggle at first. I know that sounds silly, but I’m not tech-savvy, and I just didn’t want to fall into the hamster-wheel trap of posting for following and the pressure to have the “perfect” aesthetics and images in order the “prove myself”. I decided to not focus on that, but instead chose to use platforms like Facebook and Instagram as an “online look book” with “real and raw/unedited photos! Nothing is pretty about purging lol! I also decided to just do my best with what I can do in that current moment and be genuinely me. This has made it much more enjoyable to post “tidy tips” and “before and after” reels and pictures!
Another struggle was myself, I just lacked belief in the beginning. I wondered, “will people actually book with me”? And God literally has blown my mind with the consistent bookings and balance that I so long to maintain!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Mental health is extremely important to me, and I believe that our physical space is usually a reflection of our minds. I had no idea that one day these two passions could collide!
God has a wild way of leading us back to our childhood passions! I have always been a creative since I was a little girl; I loved writing stories and poetry, dancing, and rearranging and organizing my room (literally on a weekly basis)! It was therapeutic for to have these outlets!
As I got older, I noticed these three outlets always followed me in each stage of life, especially in stressful situations. It wasn’t until the last year in my twenties that friends and family kept asking me for my organizing service in their home, closets, and offices. I would say “yes”, just to help them out and serve! My big sisters would always tell me, “Amy, please start an organizing business, you’re natural at it”. I’d say, “no, I would never do that”! Well…never say never! God switched things up completely.
Long story short, one day I was reading in the Bible after literally opening it up wherever it landed, and I read through a passage that made me tear up (2 Kings 4).
I asked the Lord “what is my oil”? And I heard so clear “Organizing. You will enter homes and turn them around physically and mentally”. I said, “God, if I do this, I need you to give me the blueprint”. He did every step of the way. That week, everything was finalized and my “first” official customer booked not even within a week. God has been blowing my mind since day one. I have literally watched people detach from stuff in such a radical and life-changing way. They have rediscovered peace in simplicity! It’s been powerful!
I have found that when I help clients clear out their spaces, they have a much easier time sorting through things emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually; it goes hand and hand. I love partnering with other mental health professionals who refer their clients to me for a declutter/ organizing session; these are my favorite types of sessions!
I am known for “deep decluttering” and “purposeful purging”! I help my clients reach a place of releasing stuff that’s no longer serves a purpose in their place! I don’t care about perfection, but I do care about helping people pursue peace by letting go of the things that rob them of it.
I understand that as a pro organizer, I cannot help everyone! I love the fact that we all have our niche, specialty, and people group that we can best serve/reach. I joyfully refer clients to other professional organizers if I think that they would be better fit for the need at hand! There’s enough people to serve for us all to be used!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have joined a few Facebook groups and have attending a few networking meetings, but honestly, my greatest mentor has been God! He literally gives me my blueprint! Other than that, I do meet with a Christian life coach at times and I attend workshops for my field! This has been awesome! One day I desire to have an actual “professional organizing mentor”, who is also a mental health advocate/professional like myself.
For those looking for a mentor, I would encourage you to join Facebook groups and other online classes/groups! You’d be so surprised who you might connect with from those platforms! Be clear on what you desire and what niche you tend to! Always be open-minded and humble in order to receive their insight!
