Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Whiteman.
Hi Wendy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a lower middle-income neighborhood in Dallas with a mother who believed in me and instilled strong Christian values in my life. I always had an interest in history and decided to major in political science in college. That path led me to law school. I attended Southern Methodist University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Juris Doctorate.
I began my legal career as prosecutor at the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and was awarded the “Texas Star” for “proficient and conscientious prosecution of cases and invaluable support and assistance” to the State of Texas.
I now have more than 30 years of legal experience and devote my practice to Elder Law and Estate Planning. I use my experience in Medicaid regulations to develop and implement strategies for families regarding asset preservation and protection.
I also have the pleasure of speaking about trending legal developments to Fortune 500 companies regarding issues of Elder Law. I am the recent author of “Creative Caregiving and Beyond: Helping Mom and Dad” and also host of the “Creative Caregiving and Beyond” Podcast found on YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, LinkedIn, Facebook, iHeart Radio, and Instagram. My book is based upon my personal experiences of caring for my mother as well as my practice in the area of Elder law. The podcast is an extension of my book and I showcase individuals and businesses who share a common passion for helping Elderly loved ones. My sincere hope is that my book and podcast will help guide others along the path of caring for and respecting elder parents, relatives, and friends. We deal with the issues that come along with the changes in their lives and the lives of their loved ones such as:
-Having the Conversation
-Doing It Right the First Time
-Getting Mom and Dad Organized -Who’s in Charge?
-Relationship Dynamics
-Keeping Your Sanity and Their -Dignity Help to the Rescue!
-Estate Planning Essentials
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many challenges along the way but I have learned to focus on the vision in my heart rather than magnify the struggles along the way. My mother taught me the value of a good work ethic, to walk in love towards other and to never give up in life. I truly believe the word of God that says “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world”.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At this stage in my career, I have the opportunity to practice law they way I truly want. What sets me apart in my boutique practice is how I approach my clientele and the time I personally spend getting to know them. I have learned to treat my clients like I would want to be treated. Many of my clients are long-term and families keep in contact with me for decades. It’s truly an honor to help families facing such difficult situations with their elderly loved ones.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I learned and decided a long time ago to always remain in a state of “joy” versus “happiness” because happiness is event-related but joy is continuous in my heart.
