Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Goddess.
Hi DJ Goddess, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My Name Is DJ Goddess, I am a female DJ from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
I have been a DJ for 6 years starting in 2016.
Music has always had a big influence on my life.
I use to take dance which lead to me dancing for the Hornets and the Oklahoma City Thunder growing up in Oklahoma City after hurricane “Katrina” hit New Orleans and were forced to relocated to Oklahoma City.
Being the only female DJ in my city at the time, with hard work and dedication, I was able to showcase my talent and stay consistently booked in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and the Dallas area.
I built my brand on my own and continue to make it bigger and better with every opportunity presented to me. Always rising to the occasion.
The first year I became a DJ I literally was teaching myself for a month or 2 and got booked in my city for a big gig and the rest was history. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life.
The feeling of people being happy, feeling good, and moving around is because of you is an amazing feeling.
When you are a DJ, you are the center of attention, I set the flow of the party and many people think it’s easy being a DJ, but it is a challenging and it does take hard work and practice to be a good DJ.
My first year becoming a DJ I got booked for The OU vs. Texas “Red River Rivalry” game after parties for the weekend, and have been booked every year following 2016 which brought me many opportunities in the Dallas area.
In 2018 I was honored to go to Minneapolis, MN To DJ the Super Bowl celebrity after-parties for P Diddy, Kash Doll, Tory Lanez, and many other artist and celebrities.
It was definitely a game-changer in my DJ career.
I pushed myself to learn more about the music industry side of things. From that moment forward I knew I didn’t want to just be a local DJ.
I wanted bigger and better for my brand on a bigger scale, not just a club setting in the same city every weekend.
I know many people would be happy with a residence in their city. But I just see myself on a way bigger scale than just Oklahoma City.
2021, I Became a Coalition DJ. The biggest DJ organization. I am a part of the Midwest Region the only female DJ from Oklahoma to be Recognized in the state. Being a Celebrity DJ under more than one major artist and being able to be my own artist was my goal, and I accomplished it 3 months after speaking it into existence and working towards my goals I set for myself.
I learned to never settle even if you are doing it yourself, timing is everything and everything is not on your timing. Building my brand and my foundation has been a learning process, but an exciting one along the way. Furthering my career is what I strive for. I take pride in everything I do. Building my brand has its up by myself has its ups and down, but I love what I do. I always knew I would be an entrepreneur and I love that I am A business and a brand in myself. That’s hands down the coolest thing about it. Being a well-known DJ The “Goddess” Brand can go a far way and I can’t wait to take it there and beyond.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a DJ is an amazing experience but it is not easy to say the least, especially being in a male dominate profession being a female DJ is challenging. A lot of people do not take DJs serious. Many look at DJing as a hobby, especially female DJs. People look at female DJs as just a pretty face or “Pretty Girls” and don’t take the talent into recognition. Over the past few years, DJs are being recognized more and more over the years and women are taking over the DJ market little by little. Artist music wouldn’t be anything without the DJs known today… Being the only female in a city full of men that run almost everything dealing with nightlife, men in the industry that are already DJs and clicked up aren’t always embracing when it comes to being a new talented female DJ and having the whole package. Being a confident, attractive, business-minded, smart and talented, and a woman in any field would pose as a threat. I use to wonder why I didn’t get put on the big concerts and shows, and why male DJs that hadn’t been DJing as long as me or seasoned enough in the game to have the credentials or DJs that don’t get nearly as many bookings as me would get picked over me being the only female in my city. Male DJs look at female DJs as a threat and I do not blame them. Our image and the way the crowd clings to female DJs are different. It’s like “Who Runs The World” ‘Girls” of course.
Even being in a male dominant profession I have done so much and surpassed so many male DJs because being a women to get “respect” you have to work 20xs harder to get taken serious. I have built my brand to be marketable in any setting for bookings.
Honestly, that’s why I am as successful today. it takes discipline. You have to be firm when you demand your pricing and make sure your contracts are in order because people will try to play you, especially male promoters will try to get over on you and I learned the hard way. So, it is always good to keep your DJing business in order so no one will think they can be in control after you provide a service. You have to look at every situation professional and always have your business ready before events. It is definitely Pros and Cons being a DJ. Meeting new people and building my brand in other cities has helped me overcome so much adversity. Just staying true to myself and what I believe in the process and not taking no for an answer or letting anyone especially men in this business make you feel like you’re not good enough when you’re probably too qualified for the position to begin with. Being a DJ feels like a popularity contest at times. But I don’t look at DJing in that way. I’m a DJ because I love music and people love my music and mixes. It takes hard work and practice to become the best in whatever you decide to do in life regardless so no road is easy, but it is worth it in the end.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
On Top of being a Female DJ where I’m from, I am An Independent artist also. I’ve been writing music ever since I was a little girl and making music, taking dance, etc. Even though I’ve been in front of thousands of people from a young age and I’ve already accomplished so much in so little time being A DJ for a few years now. I was always scared to put my music out once I became a DJ. I used to be afraid that I wouldn’t get taken serious as an artist. Or people wouldn’t take me serious as A DJ anymore if I became artist. I got a total different response. The people around me were shocked and upset that I kept that talent of making music in for so long. Music just plays a big apart in many ways in my life. Writing is just like a diary of feeling, thoughts, and experiences that I’ve been through that I can share with my following and I am really good at coming up with the vision for how the music should be. I have a different thinking process when it comes to other artist. I’m well-rounded and I guess you can call me an old soul and a perfectionist when it comes to my music because it’s like the baby I’ve never had. So, I take my time with it until I feel the time is right. Taking it step by step and being in the studio and sitting in learning from people in the industry that are currently doing it has also helped me see the vision and come out a different artist already starting like I’ve been doing it for years. My music is already out on all social networks under “DJ Goddess” but i will be releasing a new project coming the summer of 2022 so be on the lookout.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Being My own Boss has worked for me. I love handling my own business. I run all of my social media accounts and bookings when it comes to DJ Goddess. I know what is going on, what needs to be done, and how it needs to be done. I have taken bits and pieces of advice along the way from my peers and it is always appreciated to see how others do things. I am grateful for the people around me that has helped. Where I am in life and how I have always been being the type of person I am. I like to have my hands on anything I am doing. It good to look how other people have made their business successful. But A lot of people in my city at least have a settling mentality. There are lot of people out making moves but those are the ones who don’t take no for an answer and think there is more to life than just being known in your own city. I’ve been playing sport since I was 3 years old my parents instilled that competitive attitude in me. So, me doing everything myself put me to a challenge. But it made me grow and learn business by handling everything when you have no choice in some cases.
In this year where I am in my career, I will be looking for management in the future. If I feel like they understand me as a person, and the vision I see for myself and what I am trying to do then I do see myself getting a professional to take over my brand and all that I have to offer.
