Today we’d like to introduce you to Delia Flores.
Hi Delia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started off doing my son’s hair, he really wanted to have braids like his daddy, but I always struggled to find someone who would be willing to braid his hair due to the texture, I would be told that it was too soft, or that his braids would not stay in. but I was determined. over the course of this pandemic, I took the time to watch lots and lots of videos on YouTube from many different braiders and practice on my son, with every style I got better and better, I am still learning, and by no means am I the greatest but it’s something that my son and I bond over, as a single mom who prefers to stay home with my sons, this has become another avenue of income, my hope is to continue to improve so that I can do this full time and be able to be with at home fulltime for my sons like I desire.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road in the least bit, there’s only so much that YouTube can teach you, and I am basically a fish out of water, but as I learn more about hair texture and what products work best for my biracial children, as well as anyone else who I may service I am confident that my clientele will grow and that my business will flourish. following your passion can become difficult with the day-to-day responsibilities that today’s social construct has placed on us, as much as one would love to spend 8-10 hours practicing and perfecting, unfortunately, that is not the case. Finding balance has been the most challenging yet. single stay at home moms – we have to hustle, I’m not the only one that prefers to stay home with my children… we become jacks of all trades… doing this here and there so that we can be available for our children which is the greatest reward, that’s the ultimate goal… to be present.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well aside from freestyle braiding, I also curate and my own bath and body products, make crystal jewelry, teach people the benefits of color therapy, and chakra balancing. I am known for speaking life into others, and always having the right words straight from The Most High, I am here to be a light, a friend, a teacher, and a student. I dabble in graphic design and website building. as I said, my greatest desire is to be a stay-at-home mom, and I do what I can so I can. I am most proud of how willing and open I am to trying new things, I am proud that I walked away from corporate America after recognizing the toxicity and narcissistic abuse that plagues that environment, I am proud that I am giving myself what I need (peace), which in turn, runs over onto my children. What sets me apart from others, is my genuineness, my vulnerability, and the unconditional love that I give to anyone who I encounter.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
