Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Cox.
Devin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was visiting New York City and noticed all the little corner stores in the bottom of apartment buildings. They had so much variety from snacks to liquor to toiletry items, and most would happily delivery to the residents above. And instantly I wondered if I could make that idea – with the trend toward high-rise, fast-paced lifestyles – work in bigger urban areas like Texas.
So that’s how In the Sack got started. We opened our first store in Dallas back in 2014 and just opened our second last month in Sundance Square in Fort Worth.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When we started, we were the first to deliver alcohol, so marketing an entirely new concept was tricky at first. People were even confused about what exactly it is that we do since we offer so much. But we quickly learned that once someone orders or comes into the store, they’re hooked. We’ve been able to cultivate a lot of regular customer relationships that way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about In the Sack – what should we know?
In the Sack is the liquor store that delivers.
We don’t want to overwhelm people, so we don’t carry as many SKUs as other liquor stores. Our motto is convenience, so you shouldn’t have to spend forever in our store or on our app looking for what you want. However, we do have options for every product at every price point – whether you want to spend $100 or $10.
We also try to carry local products, and relationships are very important to me. We do as much business as we can with people who I have done business that are good people and have bought into our brand, like Deep Eddy and Markham.
Lastly, it all boils down to quality. I refuse to keep crap on my shelves. There are a few well-known brands that I don’t carry for that reason, and I am always going to choose products that I can stand by. You can trust our recommendations.
But besides that, our chef-crafted, ready-to-eat meals really set us apart. We can bring the entire dinner experience that you would typically only receive in a restaurant to your doorstep. It’s such a hassle to have to get in your car, fight traffic, and fight traffic. Some nights you feel like going out, but some nights you don’t. And you should still be able to get restaurant-quality food, alcohol and service if you want to stay on your couch.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We’ve loved getting to know the communities we’re a part of, and we owe a big thanks to the nearby businesses, hotels, apartments, and chambers that have allowed us to do big marketing promotions. We’ve also been able to partner with other delivery apps like Minibar and Drizly to boost our presence in the marketplace.
