Two Lanez, for short, was born and raised in the Southwest area of Dallas known as Oak Cliff, Texas. Reared in a humble home by his mother Lynda, an insurance agent; his father James, a postal clerk. “James“ was also the middle name provided by his parents at birth, in his father’s honor. The nickname “Two Lanez” was given to him by his close friend Carlos, a barber at Cutz Carlito’s Way, upon witnessing his wild driving habits firsthand. Carlitos unwittingly combined the nickname “Two Lanez” with “James” which became an instant tribute to his late father who passed away not long before. It made sense why this would become his primary moniker because “Two Lanez James“ had a certain ring to it that made the name sound unique while concurrently keeping his father’s legacy alive.
At a young age, Two Lanez began writing poetry and his knack for rhyming eventually led to his first freestyle when he found himself standing among new friends, rapping in a circle. Next in rotation, it was his time to rhyme. His music influence consists of rap groups like NWA and UGK as well as most classic rock bands you can name from AC/DC to ZZ Top. With a passion for both hip hop and rock and roll, why choose only one? Genres like reggae have also heavily inspired the music TLJ makes. Growing up with a diverse interest in music is what molded him into the artist he is today.
True to his name, he contorts lyrics with such a reckless style, using methods that make him versatile to any track he touches. His uncanny ability to flow in a rhythmic cadence of rhymes allows him to tell captivating stories while being distinct to his own life experiences. Challenging the status quo, he creates roads leading to opportunities, otherwise seen by many as nothing more than mere risks of going off-the-beaten-path. He’s Two Lanez James, The Original 2LANEZ!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy come up for Two Lanez in the music business. Residing in an area so highly saturated with musicians, I knew early on I had to create my own lane and stand out from the rest. Combining storytelling with versatile rhyme patterns is what gave me an edge compared to the abundance of sound-a-likes in the industry.
