Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Porchia James.
Hi Dr. James, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Dr. Porchia James, or “Dr. Porchia.” I’m a Wife, Mother, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, US Air Force Veteran, Style and Beauty expert, best-selling author, Public Speaker, and Owner of About Face Oral & Facial Surgery PHRESH by Dr. Porchia, a luxury medical apparel line. I specialize in helping people reach their maximum potential as they evoke upon life-changing transitions, for the betterment of themselves. I use my love for surgery and style and beauty as a means to help transform people to be the best version of themselves as they transition into a new career, higher position, or to help them create the smile of their dreams.
I grew up in Dallas and graduated from the High School for Health Professions at Townview Magnet Center. I graduated Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana. I then earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College. After graduating from dental school, I commissued as a Captain in the US Air Force where I was stationed tationed at Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS), RAF Lakenheath, UK (England), and Shaw AFB (Sumter, SC). After my four-year active-duty tenure in the US Air Force in the Dental Corps, I returned to an additional 4-year residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Meharry Medical College.
I am the owner of About Face Oral & Facial Surgery in Frisco, TX, where my primary focus is on oral reconstruction and facial cosmetic surgery. I love to incorporate my artistic eye with my surgical skills to give patients complete makeovers, which allow them to have a PHRESH and revived overall look. I’m also known as “The Style Doctor” due to my sophisticated and stylish appearance, which is unlike most traditional surgeons. Outside of surgery, I am very focused on helping healthcare professionals become the best versions of themselves through my luxury medical apparel, PHRESH by Dr. Porchia.
I enjoy mentoring young women on preparing for their future careers through etiquette and proper interview and daily attire. There’s a sense of confidence that comes along with making wardrobe tweaks to whatever one typically gravitates towards on a large or small scale. How you feel on the inside can impact how you look on the outside. I just love what I do!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a very competitive field, where most are generally at the top of their dental school class, and they have to score very well on board exams in order to gain entrance into residency. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a predominantly white male-dominated field. African American women make up less than 2% of my specialty. Of that 2%, the number decreases further significantly of those in private practice. Then, you add motherhood to the equation, then, that makes it more difficult to navigate. However, for me, it made me study harder and longer in order to be the best! I can also say that I am truly grateful to have a very supportive “village” that consists of my husband and parents that are able to help with our business and family dynamic.

I’m the owner of About Face Oral & Facial Surgery in Frisco, TX where our specialty is dental implants, dental extractions, IV sedation, and facial cosmetic procedures such as Botox & dermal fillers.
I’m also the owner of PHRESH by Dr. Porchia, which is a luxury medical apparel brand that offers a rePhresh on medical apparel as you know it. This is truly medical apparel reimagined. We have couture medical lab coats that are customized to every small detail. The fabric is even custom made where it is waterproof, anti-wrinkle, and antimicrobial.
Our lab coats are compliant according to the guidelines of OSHA regarding personal protective equipment (PPE). They’re also fashionable and have some stretch, so they’re comfortable to wear. during a long shift If you’re a doctor, nurse, or professional student in a healthcare field you’ll be confident seeing your patients while displaying a level of professionalism through your crisp white coat.
I will also be expanding our medical apparel this summer to unique scrubs that fit and cover the curves of all women. Our scrubs will be wrinkle-resistant, moisture-repelling, and antimicrobial making sure you limit the amount germs you bring home on your scrubs. We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would not say that I’ve been lucky in any endeavor in my life, but I’ve truly been blessed. I’ve been blessed with many opportunities to mentor young men and women on their path to becoming doctors or expand their knowledge of healthcare throw shadowing experiences. I’ve also been blessed with a level of creativity and passion for art and beauty to use my natural gifts towards making others beautiful whether it is through oral reconstruction with dental or facial implant or if I’m dressing someone for a re-branding session so that they can take their business to the next level. I love transforming people lives so that they can be their best self, and make an About Face!
